We’ve talked so much about Deadpool 2, but it feels like there’s still so little we know about it, especially in terms of who’s going to be in it. Obviously, Ryan Reynolds will be back as the Merc with the Mouth, and so will Colossus, and Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead. It was also recently announced that Atlanta star Zazie Beetz will play Domino in the highly-anticipated sequel, but we keep futzing with the real casting announcement we’ve been desperate to hear about since the post-credits scene of Deadpool: Who the heck is playing Cable?! Well, that answer may be coming soon.
A new interview with Deadpool screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese shed some light on the subject. “An announcement will be coming very soon,” Wernick told ComicBook.com. “We’re gonna go into production in the next couple of months and cast announcements will be coming fast and furious.”
Obviously the duo didn’t tip there hand about who’s being looking at, although it’s a “short, short list,” Reese said. They did, however, give up some details about why the role’s so difficult to fill, and what the right mix of characteristics they need in someone to play Cable are.
“I think intimidating, scary, a great foil opposite the lunacy,” Reese said. “Someone with a great deadpan thing where they can react to someone who’s being crazy. Someone who also has a spark of a sense of humor. This person has to be funny because they’re buddying up with Ryan [Reynolds] and Deadpool so they just themselves to be funny but in a more serious way, if that makes sense. Physically imposing and able to emote. There’s real drama and real stakes. It’s a tough one.”
Of course, Cable also has a bright future in the X-Men film franchise. “They’ve got X-Force coming up. Cable is head of the X-Force so it’s someone who can also command a movie franchise,” Wernick added. “It’s a tall task and we have been on the hunt for a very long time. I think once it’s announced, as we get closer, people are gonna go crazy for it.”
But the buck doesn’t stop at Cable in terms of new characters appearing in Deadpool 2. Wernick and Reese promised that a cast of old favourites, and more obscure figures (like the aforementioned Negasonic) will be brought into the fold. “Yeah, Cable and Domino grabbed the headlines on Deadpool,” Reese told LRM. “But there are definitely some more obscure characters that people know or that real diehards know that will be in there just by virtue of we need a new villain, and we need some new good guys to complement [Deadpool], but it is growing. Of course, it will be all about the lunacy that is Deadpool himself.”
Deadpool 2 is expected to be in theatres everywhere sometime in 2018.
