Another day, another Deadpool 2 Cable casting rumor.
Every since the character was announced for the sequel at the end of the first Deadpool movie, the only thing everyone seems to care about is who will be playing the character. For the last year, month over month, names have been mentioned, rumored, and fan casted. Where fans may see perfect casting in Stephen Lang (Avatar) or Ron Perlman (Hellboy), the studio seems to have different presence for the character. Names on Fox’s supposed shortlist are, in no particular order: Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Russel Crowe (Gladiator), Pierce Brosnan (James Bond) and David Harbor (Stranger Things).
And now another name is in the mix.
Man of Steel‘s villain Michael Shannon is now the frontrunner, or so says Hollywood Reporter, to play Cable in Deadpool 2. However, the report does say that Shannon is not the only name on the list and that a final decision has not yet been made.
The report also states that Stranger Things star David Harbour is still on the shortlist of actors being considered for the role.
Cable is a militant, future genetic spawn of X-men’s Scott Summers and a Jean Grey. His lore is complicated but sufficed to say, he travelled back in time for some world/time saving reasons (to say the least), and would later find himself hooking up with Deadpool, making the biggest odd couple of any timeline.
In terms of look and flair, fans will instantly draw comparisons to Stephen Lang or Ron Perlman, who both might have well been born for the role. Kyle Chandler, Russel Crowe, David Harbor, and now Michael Shannon.. they’re all great actors, but they all look like they should be on the sideline coaching a High School football team (and one of them actually did… Kyle Chandler). They all have a quite intensity about them, which seems to be the presence of character Fox Studios is going for in this adapted version. Fans may or may not be happy about that but there’s always the opportunity to be convinced otherwise.
As far as Shannon goes, he’s a serious actor… an actors actor as it were. Yeah, sure, he played General Zod in Man of Steel, but can you see the guy from Midnight Special, 99 Homes, Nocturnal Animals, and HBO’s Boardwalk Empire stand to be in a 2 hr film filled with such hijinks and jovial humor as Deadpool? Never say never, but it’d be a real f**king surprise to see him suited up, steam coming out of his ears listening Reynolds’ Deadpool run his mouth off.
Cable will be introduced in Deadpool 2 alongside fellow 1990s mutant Domino, played by Atlanta‘s Zazie Beetz.
The Deadpool movie’s sequel is currently in pre-production. Reynolds will return with writer Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. David Leitch will direct. Members of the original film’s supporting cast are also expected to return.
