The more money a movie makes, the more actors get paid. So it makes sense for actors to promote their films, if for no other reason than to hope that they get a fat paycheck. This can sometimes make it hard to distinguish how true these actor’s opinions about their own work actually is. Woody Harrelson has recently come out and voiced his opinion about the upcoming Han Solo film, and his praise is that he thinks that this film is going to be the best Star Wars film to date. High Praise? Absolutely. Here’s his entire quote:
So I have a suspicion, because if you look at the whole, all the movies, the backlog of every one of these movies, there’s a lot of great stuff, but one might not be not as good with the writing in this or the acting in that or the directing in that, this has great actors, great directors, great script, and I really feel like we’re gonna make the best one.
Examining the new Star Wars films so far, The Force Awakens was almost universally praised, but most reviews didn’t claim it was the best Star Wars film ever, it was too similar to A New Hope. But it marked a fantastic revival of the Star Wars franchise and set the bar for future films. Rogue One was also highly praised, with some saying it was better than The Force Awakens, and some disagreeing. Some even said it was the best Star Wars film yet, but those were relatively few. Could this Han Solo film be the one that finally surpasses The Empire Strikes back as the fan favorite?
The yet untitled Han Solo origin story has an uphill road to climb, and it has the almost impossible job of replacing Harrison Ford as one of the most iconic characters in film history. In order to be the best, all the pieces would have to fall into place in the exact order. So what are those pieces? First and foremost, the actor. Alden Ehrenreich has been in some things, but nothing that has made him well known. That’s all about to change. With one performance he can either be slingshotted into the Star Wars hall of fame (which if we’re being honest, is there a better hall of fame to be in?) or catapulted to the end of his short career if he gets it wrong. Then there’s the screenwriters, Lawrence and Jon Kasdan. Lawrence is a Star Wars Veteran, having written the scripts for Empire, Return of the Jedi, and the Force Awakens. If anyone can write a new best Star Wars film, it’s this guy. The directing team, comprising Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have made some good films, including the Lego Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but are yet untested in the action/sci fi genre. It could go either way.
The rest of the cast can only work in the film’s favor. The film will also star Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Oh, and of course young Chewbacca.
Woody Harrelson’s words are big, but this film also has big potential, and there are a lot of good signs, although fans will probably be wary of this one until it is officially released. Still, it’s something to look forward to when it is finally released on May 25, 2018.
