Power Rangers opens in theatres everywhere today, and if you’re a 90s kid, then you already knew that and had this day circled on your calendar for a long while. But because its 2017, it isn’t just enough to think about one movie, you have to think about the series. Take Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for example, before we even got the first movie, we were told we’re going to get five. As for the Power Rangers, if this weekend goes well, we’re not just going to get a trilogy of Power Rangers movies, we’re going to get two trilogies!
“We already have a six-movie story arc,” said Haim Saban in an interview with Variety. Saban is the producer and overseer of the Power Rangers franchise, and he’s ready to get down to work on as many as five sequels to the new film version of the team. “If this film is as successful as I hope on March 24, on March 25 we’ll have the first story meeting for Movie Number Two.”
Why? According to Saban, the audience just expects you to live up to the old adage: Go big or go home! “But today’s young audience is much more sophisticated,” said Saban. “Think about movies like Jungle Book and Arrival. The effects are mind-boggling. So does the young audience expect more? You bet they do — and they will have it.”
Saban isn’t the only one banking on this not being the last Power Rangers movie. “I would love to think there will be more films,” said actor Darce Montgomery, who plays Jason the Red Ranger, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I guess we’re going to see how we do at the box office and play it from there. But I think everybody else is definitely treating this as an origins film, the first of a few.”
All questions will be answered Sunday afternoon when we get the first box office numbers…
