Talking with The Hollywood Reporter, Red Ranger, Dacre Montgomery, said this about the Green Ranger,
“A lot of the cast and I have discussed that we think it should be a girl. It makes it even: three girls, three boys. It’s left blank. It’s a cliff-hanger. Whoever you’re going to drop into that position, whether it’s a girl, it’s inevitably going to create drama. It’ll be interesting to drop that drama into it and see how we all relate to it and work with it.”
Interesting. So the Tommy that many fans grew up knowing may end up being “Tommi” or “Tommie” Oliver. Montgomery is correct that the scene which introduces Oliver is very ambiguous. All that’s shown is an empty desk with a notebook and jacket on the chair as the teacher calls out for Oliver. But there’s nothing to note whether the character is a male or female. Montgomery is also correct that it will inevitably create drama. One, because he’s put this notion of the Green Ranger being a girl, that if it isn’t people will be upset. Two, if writers stick to the original story, and keep Tommy as a male, people may be upset that the writers were too scared to embrace change.
Introducing a female Green Ranger would take a lot of that away, but who says that you can’t still experience all of the above – you’ll just have to see it from a different perspective. Montgomery once again hits the nail on the head and saying, “It’ll be interesting to drop that drama into it and see how we all relate to it and work with it.”
