If you’re old enough to remember the release of The Fifth Element, you might recall that the previous sci-fi opus from French director Luc Beeson was not exactly a universal success. Like a lot of movies with a distinctive voice, it took awhile for The Fifth Element to find an audience, but its an enthusiastic audience and Beeson’s original work now has, at the very least, a cult following. It’s worth keeping that in mind as you watch the latest trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, a visual feast for the eyes, but bound to have a very distinct appeal.
This is, of course, a passion project for Beeson. Based on the classic French series of graphic novels Valérian and Laureline, written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mézières, it’s not so hard to imagine that this movie will have a strong international appeal, but what appeal might it have in North America? Perhaps this new trailer gives an indication, but it admittedly leans a lot on the astounding visuals and the vividly realized world in which the movie is set. Might the power house team of Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne make us care about the finished product? Well, check out the trailer and you tell us.
In the 28th century, Valerian and Laureline are special operatives charged with keeping order throughout the human territories. On assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two undertake a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where species from across the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures. At the center of Alpha is a mysterious dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.
