Normally, this is the time when we would be getting most excited about the pending arrival of the next season of Game of Thrones. April was usually the launching point for the new season, but the arrival of winter on the series required that shooting dates to be pushed back, so summertime is the time for Game of Thrones now, and winter is very much hinted at in this latest teaser for the show’s penultimate season. In it, three of the series primary characters get ready for the final battle, glaring at the screen with the expectation that some bad stuff is about to go down.
In this new clip, we see the King of the North Jon Snow (Kit Harington), the Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and the woman that out Lady MacBethed Lady MacBeth Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) each take a seat upon their respective thrones. Called “Long Walk,” our three monarchs arrive to the tune of the James song “Sit Down,” and Cersei takes a long cold breath that has nothing to do with her inner disposition. Let’s roll the new teaser…
It seems that the 90-second trailer lays out visually the power dynamic between Jon, Cersei and Daenerys being the last three main players in the titular game. Leaks about the plot have said that the season begins with the three of them combining their forces to face the pending march of the White Walkers until Cersei betrays the others, perhaps a move hinted at in the teaser above where Cersei is the one whose breath is shown. Of course, after the season six finale and the definitive way she dealt with all her enemies, is anyone going to bet against Cersei for putting Cersei first? Hardly. It’s hard to believe there’s only 13 episodes left…
Game of Thrones returns on Sunday July 16 at 9 pm on HBO.
