You’ve seen Tom Cruise run (and run, and run). You seen him hang on to the back of a high speed train, hang on to the side of a plane, and hang off the side of the world’s tallest building. You’ve seen him drive a fighter plane, a stock car, a horse drawn buggy (remember Far and Away? No one? Okay). But have you seen Tom Cruise fight monsters? You will in this summer’s reboot of The Mummy, which not only seems to find Cruise as the central figure in a new monster movie, but will make him the central figure in an entirely new monsters universe franchise.
But first, we interrupt this gunfight in the Middle East somewhere to bring you the discovery of the Mummy’s tomb.
Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond fame will play the titular creature, while Cruise will play a former special forces soldier that becomes an unwitting pawn in the Mummy’s curse after dying and coming back to life it seems. It also seems like Russell Crowe has a much bigger role in the film as Dr. Henry Jekyll, another character with a monster inside though we’re left to wonder how much we’ll get into that in the movie. Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance round out the cast in the film directed by Alex Kurtzman from a script by Fast and Furious series writer Chris Morgan.
The Mummy will be in theatres everywhere on June 9.
