Who is Sylvester Stallone? That’s a deep, probing psychological and philosophical question so let’s narrow this down: Who is Sylvester Stallone playing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? The man once known as “The Italian Stallion” has been known to have a substantial part in the Marvel Studios sequel for a while, but the mystery was second to that of Kurt Russell, who, as it turned out, was playing Star-Lord’s father, Ego the Living Planet. But with a month until the sequel’s release, it’s getting hard to keep secrets, and now we think we may know who Stallone is playing.
A Spanish-language site posted a page of a press kit on its Twitter feed that reveals the identity of Stallone’s character, and the winner is… Stakar Ogord, AKA: Starhawk! Who? Well, the current comic book iteration of the character was introduced back in 2002 as the child of the superheroes Quasar and Kismet, meaning that he was half-human and half-artificial lifeform. (Kismet was created by a group called the Enclave who were experimenting with the creation of super-powered beings, the first result of which was Adam Warlock.) After making a name for himself in the 31st century with the Guardians 3000, Starhawk came back in time to work with the present day Guardians of the Galaxy.
But that’s the comics, and director James Gunn has shown that he likes to go his own way so far as the mythology of Guardians characters is concerned. As for Stallone and Starhawk, there’s got to be more to this than a random tweet right? You would be correct. A follow-up on MCU Exchange, details how in the junior novelization of GOTG2, there’s a scene where Yondu (Michael Rooker) enters a bar and encounters “a legend among the Ravagers” who mentions Aleta, AKA: Stakar Ogord’s adopted sister. The Ravager in question, wearing a blue uniform, then expels Yondu from the Ravagers saying, he “won’t hear no Horns of Freedom when you die, and the colors of Ogord will not flash over your grave.” This, perhaps, sets up Yondu’s joining up with the Guardians in the film.
So how seriously can we take this? Exhibit A: It was previously rumoured that Stallone was playing a Ravager. Exhibit B: In 2015 Gunn talked about his love for Starhawk, and mentioned later that he would bring his favourite character to the big screen in GOTG2. Exhibit C: The role that Elizabeth Debicki is playing in GOTG2 is Kismet, AKA: Ayesha. Pretty definitive, but we’ll probably only know for certain once GOTG2 opens in a couple of weeks.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theatres everywhere on May 5.
