It was announced that Marvel will be adding to its cinematic universe with its first 30-minute comedy show  – an adaptation of New Warriors. It will mark the second Marvel show on Freeform (formally ABC Family) after Cloak and Dagger. New Warriors is all about a group of teen superheroes with aspirations to be the next generation of Avengers. The group has been home to the likes of Nova, Firestar, Speedball, Darkhawk, Scarlet Spider, and many, many more over the years. Who exactly will make up the core group in this new live-action adaptation, remains to be seen. There is one character, however, that is getting all the attention. That character is Doreen Green – The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Despite never having been part of the team in the comics, she will join alongside the New Warriors in the show. Given how popular the character is (thanks to the delightful comic series by  Ryan North and Erica Henderson) it might as well be called Squirrel Girl and The New Warriors. Don’t let her seemingly lame superpower – the ability to communicate with Squirrels – fool you. She’s beaten the likes of  Thanos, Deadpool, and Doctor Doom.

Even though New Warriors has a whole superhero cast to fill, all anyone seems to care at the moment is “So Who’s Going To Play Squirrel Girl?”. No actress has been officially announced, nor is there any sort of rumored short list. It’s all too early for that. But what it is time for, is a wonderful thing called “Fan Casting”. Fan casting (sometimes dream casting or fantasy casting) is the practice of speculative casting, suggesting actors or other individuals to play characters without canonical real-life versions.

So here we are. Here are 5 actresses that could play the quirky, socially awkward, but still totally unbeatable, Squirrel Girl.

Anna Kendrick

Fans may remember Anna Kendrick from her role as Scott’s sister, Stacey in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World or maybe even the hit comedy series Pitch Perfect and its sequel. Regardless of what she is best known from, fans have been beating down the doors of the Internet suggesting she play Doreen in any adaptation of the squirrel talking heroine.

The idea of Kendrick taking a whack at the role isn’t so far-fetched. When asked in an interview with Net A Porter in July 2016 who she would want to play if she had a shot at the Marvel Cinematic Universe, here’s what she had to say:

My brother sent me a ‘Squirrel Girl’ comic because he thinks I should….I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!

It didn’t take long for the Internet fanboys and fangirls to run with the idea and Twitter has been abuzz with the notion of Kendrick playing the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl ever since.

It isn’t just the fans who are excited at the prospect of seeing Kendrick take on the role, Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of none other than the forthcoming The Avengers: Infinity War expressed a desire to see her strap on the tail and ears:
“It would be perfect casting, and we’re huge Anna Kendrick fans.”

Sadly, there just wasn’t enough screen time to make it happen in the third Avengers flick, but with an endorsement coming in from the Russo brothers, it seems like some casting agents should be picking up the phone right about now.

The real question here is could Kendrick take on a role in a live-action television series given her other commitments? The answer seems to be an astounding, YES! According to her IMDB page, she has no commitments booked in 2018 or 2019 with only a voice-acting role in the upcoming Trolls 2 scheduled for 2020. Granted, she could have some deals in the works we don’t yet know about that hasn’t hit her page, but given what we do know now, it seems like the job would be hers for the taking.

The only thing that might hold her back from accepting the job would be that she has never been a television actress. If her mindset is to only work in film with only brief cameos in television like her 2012 stint on Family Guy where she only provided her voice, it may be difficult for her to make the switch from the big screen down to the small.

Alison Brie

Nerds everywhere remember Alison Brie as the adorable and nerdy, yet sexy member of the group from Community where she played Annie Edison. When it comes to finding an actress with the skills to take on a character who is just a little bit off-the-wall, we really don’t need to look much further than Brie. Her resume is filled with appearances on shows like American Dad, Axa Cop, BoJack Horseman, and even some video game voiceover work for a title already in the Marvel Universe: Marvel Avengers Academy where she voiced Black Widow.

There hasn’t been much buzz around the net regarding Brie as a choice to play Squirrel Girl, but that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t be a perfect fit. Her ability to play a clean-cut, cute, and quirky “girl next door” would fit perfectly in her portrayal as the character. Fans have even given her the photoshop treatment in support of her potential casting in the role:

While that isn’t the greatest work in Photoshop ever done and it certainly doesn’t compare to the care and love that went into Kendrick’s Twitter post (and there are many), Brie would make just as great a choice to play the unusual character as any of the lovely ladies on this list.

Inevitably, we need to look into what her upcoming schedule looks like and it’s surprisingly pretty open according to her IMDB page. She has some work this year in the TV series Glow with two appearances, but nothing else. Like Kendrick, it’s unknown what deals might be in the works for the Community star, but with a wide-open schedule and a penchant for playing recurring roles on television, it’s likely Brie would take on the role if offered.

Unlike other actresses on this list, Brie hasn’t made many moves towards working the superheroine angle with only the voice-over work for Marvel Avengers Academy as her only credit in the genre. Whether that is the result of a lack of interest or a lack of offers remains to be seen.

Shannon Purser

It’s been long enough and as everyone knows, Barb needs some justice! Casting Shannon Purser in the role of the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl would certainly make up for what the actress went through in that pool in the Upside-Down from her time on Stranger Things. Given the fan reaction to her Barb character and the fact that of all the women on this list, she is the only one who actually looks somewhat like the character in question, she would be a perfect choice to take on the role.

Purser’s career has blown up since her time on Stranger Things, which was her first on-screen credit. Since then, she has been cast as Ethel Muggs on Riverdale and has wrapped up production on three films coming out in 2017 and 2018. Though she does have work scheduled on a TV pilot, which could take her out of the running should the show get picked up, she has expressed a specific interest in playing the character:

“I think Squirrel Girl is just adorable but at the same time is totally boss and completely awesome. I think people need a character like that….It’s easy in the superhero realm to feel like a lot of the female superheroes we see are grown women who are super responsible and know what their purpose is and that kind of thing. Squirrel Girl is a little bit younger and like a real person, trying to figure out her life and then also having to save the world. I love that.”

Given her age and look, Purser is a shoe-in to play the role and with her ever-expanding resume of television and film commitments, getting her as soon as possible to play the character is definitely a concern. Purser is showing no signs of slowing down her ever-increasing momentum–and that’s with her new enrollment in college. We already know she wants to play her, we know she looks the part and would do a great job playing her, the real question is will the Internet stand behind her as a potential player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? NerdBastards thinks… yes!

Zosia Mamet

Zosia Mamet’s screen credits have seen her perform as Shoshanna Shapiro in the award-winning hit, Girls as well as some time on Mad Men and even alongside fellow contender Mae Whitman in TV’s Parenthood. Of all the actresses on this list, her name has not been thrown around Reddit or other sites as a possible player for Squirrel Girl and we, at NerdBastards are hoping to reverse that calamity! When it comes to diverse actresses with the chops to strap on a tail, some false teeth, and cute squirrel ears, Mamet is definitely a name that comes to mind and she has been spotted on the Ranker list alongside the other ladies on this list as a possible choice.

As of this moment, Mamet’s IMDB page shows that all of her projects are in post-production save for two films set for release this year. Without any projects set in stone on her page, it’s reasonable to assume that she could be made available to take on a recurring role in the Marvel series. Since she has no shame about working in television and is certainly adept at taking on film roles, she would be an excellent candidate to play Doreen.

Unfortunately, Mamet hasn’t expressed any interest in the role, but the day is still young and the news of Squirrel Girl finally coming to television may not have made it into her inbox just yet. With any luck, she will jump on the bandwagon of potential leading ladies and throw her hat into the ring as a prospective Doreen.

Mae Whitman

Mae Whitman is yet another star whose name has been passed around as a possible contender for the ears and tail of Squirrel Girl and fans have definitely shown their support. Whitman can best be remembered (or forgotten given her role on the show) for her portrayal as Ann Veal. Of course, her acting credential doesn’t stop with that show, she has made multiple television appearances over the years on The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, In Treatment, Robot Chicken, Young Justice, and she even had a role in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World playing Roxy Richter, the 4th member of the League of Evil Exes.

The fans aren’t the only people who would like to see Whitman play the role. As soon as the news broke that there was a New Guardians series in development with none other than the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Whitman Tweeted:

She is even whining about her desire to play Doreen so why not give her a shot at it? She certainly has the talent to stand alongside the other members of the New Warriors and wouldn’t she look cute talking to her squirrel pals? Given that she seems to have been the first star to express an interest within hours of the news breaking, she certainly stands above her peers as a contender, but the question is whether or not someone with as busy a schedule as hers could even take on the project.

Getting Whitman into the tail may not be as difficult as with other actresses since most of her work recently has been in the voice-over booth. She recently wrapped up her performance as April O’Neil for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon that began in 2012 and is scheduled to film a TV movie called Good Girls this year. Beyond that, her schedule appears to be open to new opportunities so any casting agents who might be reading this should think about getting her agent on the phone!

BONUS: John Barrowman!

John Barrowman may be Captain Jack Harkness and the occasional Ra’s al Ghul on the Flarrowverse, but the actor is the only one on this list who actually took the time to put on the costume and there was no way we could leave it off a list like this:
