Ever since it was announced that Shane Black was directing a new film in The Predator franchise, there was a little confusion if this was going to be a reboot of the franchise or a sequel to the second film. After a little bit of clarification, it’s sort of both. The Predator will in a way, “reboot” the franchise (and make us collectively forget those Alien Vs Predator films) and will be a sequel to the original 1987 film. With it being story wise, connected to the original film, this led many fans to wonder if Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer would make a return, having been the sole survivor of the Yautja’s hunting of his special forces group in Central America. It could be a great connective tissue to bridge the old film and the new one. However, it looks like, that’s not going to happen.
Speaking with Yahoo Movies about the possibility of him returning to a few of his famous franchises including a Twins sequel, the long awaited King Conan, and The Predator. Unfortunately, Arnold will not return for the sequel.
“They asked me, and I read it, and I didn’t like it — whatever they offered. So I’m not going to do that, no. Except if there’s a chance that they rewrite it, or make it a more significant role. But the way it is now, no, I won’t do that.”
That kinda sucks. It would have been cool for him to either do a cameo, or make a Han Solo/The Force Awakens type of appearance where he could show the new heroes the ropes in dealing with the Yautja. However, It looks like Arnold will not be returning to the famous franchise. Shane Black (who appeared in the original film and directed such hits as Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Iron Man 3) was asked on social media by a fan about the cause for him not being in the sequel.
