Marvel Studios had a busy day today!
Guardians of the Galaxy just about ready to hit theaters, and has been getting some great first reactions by some critics. Kevin Feige decided to let the floodgates open and hosted an Open House at the Disney lot in Burbank. There, members of the press were treated to all sorts of details for the upcoming Phase 3 films including Black Panther, Antman and The Wasp, and Captain Marvel.
The most exciting part of the presentation was Black Panther. At the Open House, critics were treated to a sizzle reel for the upcoming film. While the footage is not currently available, the descriptions sound amazing! In the sizzle reel, members of the press were able to take their first glimpse at Wakanda. In the isolated African nation, they have cars that fly around like space ships as well as beautiful scenery, like the vibranium waterfalls and the pristine jungle of the African nation. Actress Lupita Nyong’o, who plays a Nakia, a member of the Dora Milaje (Black Panther’s all-women bodyguards) in the jungle fighting against soldiers with machine guns dismantling them with ease. Another clip shows Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis) as he engages in friendly insults with Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) in a casino, and then T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and the Dora Milaje protect Ross in an action sequence in the casino. It’s described as a very James Bond-like scene. Another clip show’s T’Challa as he is officially crowned King in an extravagant ceremony and celebration full of crowds of Wakandan citizens dancing in celebration at the event. There is also the hint of a same-sex relationship among the Dora Milaje as Danai Gurira’s Okoye and Florence Kasumba‘s Ayo flirt together.
Ant-Man and The Wasp director Peyton Reed was also on hand to discuss the upcoming film as well as showcased of concept art for the second outing of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) as he teams up with Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly). In some of the concept art, they showed that in the film there would be vehicles that can shrink and enlarge just like they can. Reed also confirmed that Lang will be both Ant-Man and Giant-Man in the upcoming film and also some of the designs for Hope’s Wasp costume.
Also, there were some concept designed for the upcoming Captain Marvel film showing actress Bree Larson in her Captain Marvel costume, which will mirror the current outfit her character has in the comics (an illustration by Jamie McKelvie is above for reference). Some of the designs also showed Captain Marvel in action as she faced off against purple eyed robots in city streets shooting lasers at her. It is theorized that they are Kree robot sentries. Kevin Feige also confirmed that a director has been selected for the upcoming film. For now, the director remains a mystery, but an announcement is expected soon.
And if you thought Marvel Studios weren’t coming to this year’s Comic Con, think again! Kevin Feige also confirmed that they will be at this year’s convention and have a panel at the famous Hall H. It is expected that fans will get their first official trailer for Black Panther there as well.
