People of a certain age will remember when personal computers started coming to our elementary schools, a day and age when there was no internet, and all you could do was play your choice of one of two games on floppy disc: Oregon Trail, and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Since there are only so many times you can die of dysentery or starvation and write “poop” on your tombstone before you lost interest, many of us killed a lot of hours trying to find the daring criminal with the last name of a major California city. And now, thanks to Netflix, we will do so again.
A new Carmen Sandiego animated series will be produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the software publisher behind the most recent Carmen Sandiego computer game. Duane Capizzi (The Batman) and CJ Kettler (The Tick) will executive produce the show, which will feature the voice of Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez as Carmen who will be joined on her capers by Player, her friend and “chief accomplice” that will be voice by Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things. According to the announcement, the new series will not only look at the “Where” in regards to Carmen, but the “Who” of who she really is, and the “Why” of why the life of crime?
The original Carmen Sandiego video game was released for PCs in 1985 as a fun way for kids to learn about world geography. It has been followed up by nearly 20 subsequent editions along with a highly popular game show on PBS in 1991, which became more well-known for the throwback a cappella stylings of the group Rockapella. Fox Kids aired an animated version of Carmen Sandiego called Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego in 1994, which later won an Emmy for Best Animated Program.
There’s no set release date for Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego yet, but it’s expected to land on Netflix sometime in 2019.
