We’ve all wondered, and now we know! Once, 20th Century Fox expected to release three X-Men films in the calendar year 2016, but there only ended up being two, and at least one of them was a massive box office success. That was Deadpool of course, and long have we waited on news of when we might actually see it’s sequel. Now, we finally know: 2018! And because this is Fox we’re talking about, not only are we going to get another Deadpool next year, we’re going to be getting two other X-Men movies too, and before you ask, one of them isn’t Gambit.
As for Deadpool 2, you can expect to see it in theatres everywhere on June 1, 2018, which is just one week after the release of the as-yet untitled Han Solo Star Wars movie. The film will be directed by John Wick co-director David Leitch and will feature the live-action debut of X-Force characters Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz). Ryan Reynolds, of course, is returning as the titular Merc with the Mouth.
Deadpool 2 will be sandwiched between two new X-Men projects. New Mutants, the long-in-the-works spin-off featuring the junior class of mutants at Xavier’s School that’s been developed by The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone, will finally be seen on cinema screens on April 13, 2018. Then, in the fall, Dark Phoenix will rise as the seventh entry in the main X-Men movie series on November 2, 2018. Not much detail has been revealed about that one yet, but it is expected that Sophie Turner will return as Jean Grey and that series producer Simon Kinberg will be stepping behind the camera as director.
In other major franchise news, the four Avatar sequels finally have landing dates. We’ll get Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 back-to-back on December 18, 2020 and December 17, 2021, and then, after a three year break, we’ll get Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 back-to-back on December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025. “Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels,” read a post to the Avatar Facebook page.
In other musical chairs release date news Shane Black‘s The Predator is being pushed back from a February release date to a late summer berth of August 3, 2018.
We’ll have more details on all these projects as they become available.
