When it’s not enough to have a gigantic Jaeger piloted by two people who are badass enough on their own, it’s often best to throw some killer weapons on board. That’s what it looks like the folks behind the upcoming film, Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to the hit 2013 film are doing. Thanks to some production material released in February alongside some new images from collectible toy company, Tamashii Nations, we now have a better idea of just how deadly these Jaegers will be.
The promotional image featured above that was released in February seemed to confirm that Gipsy Danger, the Jaeger piloted by Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) in the first film, was getting a redesign. That has been confirmed now that we have the below images from Tamashii Nations depicting their forthcoming toy line for the film:
Gypsy Danger has become the newly-named Gypsy Avenger and according to the picture, it’s a complete overhaul. It isn’t yet known whether or not they got out their wrenches and salvaged, then upgraded the existing Mech or rebuilt this one from scratch… and it doesn’t really matter. Based on the blueprints and the pics (And some folks at the fansite PacificRim2-Movie.com), we know that the new model will feature the original’s chain sword and elbow rocket. There is an Airborne Launch System, which features a dual vortex turbine in the chest instead of its predecessor’s single engine. Additionally, the Jaeger’s hands have an upgraded Plasmacaster and a Gravity Sling.
Now, whatever all of that means is left to be seen and we don’t yet know who will be piloting this Jaeger. Most people presume it will be Star Wars: The Force Awakens alum John Boyega playing Jake Pentecost (Idris Elba’s son from the first film) alongside Scott Eastwood’s Nate Lambert, but this has yet to be confirmed.
The rest of the cast will be filled out by several returning players to include Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori, Charlie Day as Newt Geiszler, and Burn Gorman as Dr. Hermann Gottlieb. New additions to the cast include Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Nick Tarabay, and Zhang Jin. Guillermo del Toro has vacated the directing chair for Daredevil’s Steven S. DeKnight.
Pacific Rim: Uprising is scheduled to hit theaters on February 23rd, 2018. Keep an eye on NerdBastards.com for all of your movie and nerd news as we will continue to cover any developments on this and many other nerdy projects on the horizon!
