Hellboy. Hellboy. Hellboy. Saying it 3 times won’t get director Guillermo Del Toro back in the directing chair for the a long awaited and fan demanded Hellboy 3. Not happening. Not ever. Why, why crush such dreams? Well besides Del Toro dashing such hopes himself, there comes a word. A word that is typically so rotten that those who hear it screech and cry in terror. That word is… REBOOT *Cue the ominous Dun-Dun-Duuuun!!!
Yes, Hellboy is getting rebooted. But in this case, this one in a handful of cases, a reboot might not be such a bad thing.
If fans of Hellboy had a big red fist of doom like the properties titular hero, they’d be smashing through walls…desk..etc. Reboot, its such a dirty word. Occasionally, however, it takes a complete 180 to bring new life to beloved franchise. This time, if reports are correct, Hollywood is making some right moves.
According to the Hollywood Reporter
, Millennium is negotiating an R Rated reboot with Neil Marshall
(The Descent, Game of Thrones
) in talks to direct and will star David Harbour
) as Hellboy.
Hellboy was created in 1993 by Mike Mignola and became an indie comic hit as it told of a demon, raised by a professor, working to fight supernatural evildoers for an organization called Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Its cinematic adaptation in 2004 starring Ron Perlman and subsequent sequel in 2008 both beget strong cult followings. Try as he might to make a 3rd picture, director Guillermo Del Toro was unable to harness financial support from the studio.
Not having Del Toro back to direct or having Perlman don the red-skinned demon make-up once more is, well, disheartening. Some may even cry “bullshit”. But his films, this character, they are not sacred cows. It’s been almost 10 years since the last Hellboy movie. That story is quite frankly dead. The opportunity to bring some freshness to the property and the possibilities that may bring, its exciting to those who dare to pause and think about it. Perhaps something that is more faithful to the comics?
News out of nowhere? Yes. Mixed feelings? Sure. The possibility of a (hopefully) hoofed footed Hellboy going about an R Rated adventure with the rest of BPRD? Goddamn, if that doesn’t sound so bad.
