Now is the time for all once great TV series to be great again. The fine art of reunited actors as their famous roles in beloved series has been a regular theme in this era of Peak TV, as networks, channels, and outlets of all sorts hope that nostalgia plus niche means eyeballs. The most recent series rescued from the TV graveyard is Psych, the highly popular USA Network series about a not-psychic psychic detective and his much put-upon friend that help the Santa Barbara Police solve crimes. And when you think Santa Barbara, of course you think “Christmas special”!
USA has announced that the original cast will be getting together again later this month to shoot a new movie that will be aired on the cable channel just in time for Christmas. Bosom buddies Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best friend, Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill) will be back solving another, likely holiday-themed, crime with the assistance of Detectives Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and O’Hara (Maggie Lawson), SBPD Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson), and Shawn’s sometime disapproving retired SBPD detective Henry (Corbin Bernsen).
The ambitious friends — along with some returning fan-favorite characters — come together during the holidays after a mystery assailant targets one of their own. A comedic thrill-ride follows, as the wild and unpredictable Psych team pursues the bad guys, justice… and, of course, food!
Likely a pineapple. So why now? “Psych is a beloved part of our USA family, and what better time to reunite with family than the holidays,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment in a press release. “Steve and James have taken the unique brand of comedy that the series honed over eight seasons and packed it in to a two-hour movie that successfully rekindles one of the greatest bro-mances in television history.”
“Psych has an absolutely phenomenal and constantly refreshing fan base. We couldn’t be more thrilled to gift our Psych-os this holiday season with Psych: The Movie,” added Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, and President, Universal Cable Productions. “Steve, James, Dulé, and the rest of the gang are all returning for a delightful holiday movie that will not — nay, dare not — disappoint!”
Series creator Steve Franks is directing the movie and co-writing the script with series star Roday. The film starts shooting in Vancouver on May 24, and will air on USA at some point in December.
