For those of you that were holding out hope against hope that Mike Mignola‘s Facebook post the other day was a tease, and that there’s still a chance for the final chapter of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy trilogy, prepare to be greeted by some cold water. Not only was this not a “What If…” scenario by the Hellboy creator, but now one of the screenwriters on the project is speaking out in general terms about what people might be able to expect from the project. In short, Hellboy will be returning to his horror roots with something both “dark” and “more gruesome.”
“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy,” said Andrew Cosby in an new interview with Silver Screen Beat. Cosby, formally a writer and executive producer on Eureka, penned the script with novelist Christopher Golden and Mignola for what’s being called Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.
“[Director] Neil [Marshall] said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics,” he added.
Of secondary consideration is the fact that this is bound to be a blow for Hellboy fans of del Toro’s work on the character. Cosby seemed to want to assure that this project is taking its time to get it right, and all involved are aiming to make the best Hellboy movie they possibly can. “Honestly, everyone has just been working overtime to bring that Mignola magic to the big screen,” he added. “The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be.”
And what of the new Hellboy himself, Stranger Things actor David Harbour? He had the following to say on Twitter.
