For all that fans have been clamouring for a new series of Arrested Development, both before and after Netflix‘s original fourth season, the fifth season of the hugely popular TV series has proved elusive. It has been in very high demand, since the show had developed an enormous cult following when it hit streaming sites many years after its initial release, and the fourth season just wasn’t enough to satisfy hungry fans. Recently, rumours have been gaining traction that the fifth season might finally be in production and that the patience of the Bluth family’s avid watchers may soon be rewarded.

With star Jason Bateman officially announcing his return to the show via Twitter, those rumours are starting to seem pretty solid, but there wasn’t a whole lot of news to help bring an end to the suspense.

Now, it has been officially announced that the fifth season on the show will come to Netflix as early as next year, as the current cultural and political climate seems ripe for some Bluth antics. The show’s creator Mitchell Hurwitz explained the decision to return now in a statement:

“In talks with Netflix we all felt that that stories about a narcissistic, erratically behaving family in the building business — and their desperate abuses of power — are really underrepresented on TV these days. I am so grateful to them and to 20th TV for making this dream of mine come true in bringing the Bluths, George Sr., Lucille and the kids; Michael, Ivanka, Don Jr., Eric, George-Michael, and who am I forgetting, oh Tiffany. Did I say Tiffany? — back to the glorious stream of life.”

Whatever else you might glean from his comments, there are bound to be a lot of fans excited by these hints for the show’s future. As well as having a solid foundation to jump from, it seems like it’s drawing on a wealth of all new comedy gold.

Though the news has only officially broken now, the main players on the show have likely known for a while. Producer Ron Howard has spoken openly about his relief in finally being able to talk about it now that the rest of the world knows too:

“Whew! I can finally answer the question … Hell yes! Warming up my uncredited narrator vocal chords. Now the only thing I will have to be coy about is all the craziness the Bluths are going to face this season.”
