We are truly into the summer movie season now with the Memorial Day weekend one week away, and after that, it looks like nonstop hits with Wonder Woman and The Mummy, back-to-back blockbusters about powerful women with mythological roots. If you’ve seen any of The Mummy trailers or featurettes so far then you’re probably already sold or unsold on the latest iteration of the classic Universal Studios monster, but if you’re excitement level’s at 9, 10, or 11, then you will definitely want to enjoy this final look at the film before its June release. Once again, welcome to a new world of gods and monsters.
So that’s pretty straightforward, right? Tom Cruise versus Mummy. Perhaps the major difference between this and previous trailers is the way it explicitly addresses the fact that Cruise’s character, Nick Morton, dies in the spectacular plane crash, and the reason he wakes up and starts walking around like it was just a restful nap. Apparently, Nick is cursed! That means that the Princess Ahmanet (played by the awesome Sofia Boutella) wants something from Nick, or rather wants to use him. But as Dr. Jekyll (Russell Crowe) points out, it “It takes a monster to defeat a monster.”
Of course, there’s more riding on The Mummy than just having a successful Mummy movie. The appearance of Jekyll and his
S.H.I.E.L.D. Prodigious organization is of course meant to open up a wider cinematic universe that could eventually include Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Creature From the Black Lagoon, and the Invisible Man. How will those projects proceed from a potentially successful Mummy? Is Cruise now a monster monster hunter that will fight the good fight? I guess we’ll have to stay tuned and see what becomes of this new dark universe.
The Mummy comes to claim your soul on June 9.
