With all this casting news, it seems that production on 20th Century Fox‘s long in the works X-Men spin-off film, New Mutants, is getting closer to the beginning of principal photography. We’ve got a Cannonball, a Magik, and a Wolfsbane, and now it seems we have a Sunspot. With just Mirage and Warlock left, this New Mutants team is almost good to go in what writer/director Josh Boone has described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes-style horror movie” set in the X-Men universe. So who will play the Brazilian mutant with solar ray absorbing and blasting super-powers? You may know him from Netflix…
According to Deadline, Henry Zaga of the hit series 13 Reasons Why has joined fellow Netflix star Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things to play Robert da Costa, aka: Sunspot. His ability to absorb solar energy and channel it into making himself super-strong, able to fly, and fire blasts of heat and light should give Zaga’s character a serious horror vibe (see image above). Zaga’s Sunspot will join Heaton’s Cannonball, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, and Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) as Magik as the new team of teen mutants learning to use their abilities and protest a world that hates and fears them. Rosario Dawson has also been cast as Dr. Cecelia Reyes, a mutant doctor who becomes a mentor to the team.
This won’t be the first time that Sunspot has appeared in an X-Men movie; Adan Canto played the character as one of the few remaining X-Men in a dystopian future ruined by Sentinels in X-Men: Days of Future Past. We’ll have more casting news about New Mutants as it becomes available.
New Mutants will be in theatres everywhere on April 13, 2018.
