What is it they say about when inspiration strikes? That’s the mode Patty Jenkins is in right now. More on that in a minute, but let’s set this up by saying Jenkins has got Warner Bros and DC Entertainment over a barrel right now. Not only is Wonder Woman the rare critical and fan success for the DC Expanded Universe, but its one of the biggest, most celebrated movies of the summer so far, and will likely be seen as one of the best of the year once 2017 winds down. Well, it’s a good thing then that Jenkins has got some ideas on what to do next.
“I had an epiphany about Wonder Woman 2,” Jenkins told Joblo.com. “I was like, you don’t have to do this. It doesn’t have to be a foregone conclusion that you do Wonder Woman 2. But then as I was falling asleep I had an epiphany. I was like, Wait a minute. You have the greatest character of all time that you love dearly, with a cast that you love sitting at the palm of your hand at this day and age — you can do whatever you want with them — are you crazy? And then I suddenly realized, it’s not more, it’s another movie. It’s its own movie. And it’s got to be great.
“It’s a continuation of the same character, but there’s a great, entirely different story to be told,” she continued. “With this character in our world, that’s fun, because now she exists, just funny, and also says something profound about the world we’re in right now.”
It’s important to note that Jenkins hasn’t officially been signed to direct Wonder Woman 2, and she had no option on her Wonder Woman 1 contract that obliges her to some kind of immediate comeback. But considering Wonder Woman‘s success, Warners/DC would have to be crazy *not* to hire Jenkins again, as she could just as easily write her own ticket at this point now that she’s a successful blockbuster filmmaker. Fingers crossed, though.
Wonder Woman will next be seen in Justice League this November.
