While Americans are enjoying a long weekend to celebrate their independence, their former overlords in the United Kingdom were beginning work on the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The continuing adventures of the British and American wizards and No-majs decades before Harry Potter entered the wizarding world will further expand the universe by focusing on the villainy of Gellert Grindelwald, and introducing the young version of his famous nemesis, Albus Dumbledore. Now, a press release announcing the commencement of principal photography has shed new details on how all this is going to come together in the next movie.
First, some casting details. Fantastic Beasts 2 will reunite Eddie Redmayne magizoologist and author Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Auror Tina Goldstein, Alison Sudol as her sister Queenie, and Dan Fogler as No-maj baker Jacob Kowalski. That last one will be interesting because Jacob’s memory of his entire adventure in the first Fantastic Beasts was erased. Johnny Depp will also return in more than a cameo as Grindelwald, Zoë Kravitz will have a bigger role in the film too as Leta Lestrange, whose picture Newt carries with him, and Ezra Miller will also make some kind of return as Credence, the much abused young wizard that lost control of his power in part one.
As for new cast members, you’ve of course heard that Jude Law will be playing the young Dumbledore. He will be joined by Callum Turner as Theseus Scamander, Newt’s older brother who is an Auror and a war hero, and Claudia Kim, who will play a young woman we first meet as a featured attraction at a wizarding circus. The new cast will also include William Nadylam as a wizard named Yusuf Kama, Ingvar Sigurdsson as a bounty hunter named Grimmson, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as wizard circus manager Skender, and Kevin Guthrie as Abernathy, Tina and Queenie’s boss at the Magical Congress of the USA.
The plot? “J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. However, as he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings,” said the Warner Bros. press release. “The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina, Queenie and Jacob, but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.”
The release also promises to take the audience on an adventure that spans New York, London and Paris, and also promises “some surprising nods to the Harry Potter stories that will delight fans of the books and film series.”
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 will be in theatres everywhere on November 16, 2018.
