It seems strange that in about six months time we’ve gone from dreaming about a Guillermo del Toro Hellboy 3, to its unceremonious death, to a sudden, darker resurrection in the hands of Neil Marshall, but are we ready for a leap to active production for Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen? It might be happening sooner than you, or anyone else, might think. In the news mix today is word that this new Hellboy might be close to getting a distributor and that the movie might be shooting later this year. Are you ready for a new Hellboy played by the sheriff from Stranger Things?
Well, one name player in Hollywood might be. In a report initially shared by the Splash Report, Lionsgate is in negotiations to become the distributor of Rise of the Blood Queen. Considering that this Hellboy has been promised as a hard R-rated horror movie, the direction makes sense as Lionsgate has distributed several horror movies including, most prominently, the Saw series, and also R-rated comic book movies like Punisher: War Zone, Kick-Ass, and Dredd, which were all released in North America under Lionsgate as well. Now this isn’t official. The Wrap says that Lionsgate is in “advanced negotiations”, so it’s not a done deal, and it would constitute Hellboy‘s third studio move in this 13 year cinematic history.
On the bright side though, The Wrap also reported that principal photography is expected to begin on the film this coming September. Character actor David Harbour is taking over for Ron Perlman as monster hunting demon agent for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Marshall will be directing from a script by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. There’s presently no release date for the film.
