As Marvel continues to dominate on the big screen, things are also heating up for the television shows. In addition to the next Netflix show The Defenders gearing up for release next month and Inhumans premiering this fall, Marvel is also preparing for a bunch of new television shows. Runaways was announced for a 2018 release on Hulu and has fans excited. Marvel will also be premiering Cloak and Dagger on the new ABC channel Freeform. In addition to Cloak and Dagger, Freeform will have another Marvel TV show next year, The New Warriors.
Traditionally a team of young heroes, the New Warriors operated almost like a Jr. Avengers type of team. In the comics, they have had many members including the likes of Nova, Speedball, Namorita, and countless others. Their most famous member is Squirrel Girl, the popular “Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.” A natural fighter, she has defeated the likes of Doctor Doom, The Mandarin, Thanos, Wolverine, Deadpool, and countless Avengers as well. When it was announced that Freeform would be creating a New Warriors TV show, fans were more than excited to see Squirrel Girl on the small screen. Today, Freeform announced casting for the upcoming TV show.
Actress Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) has been cast for the role of Squirrel Girl. Other members of the New Warriors will include Derek Theler (Baby Daddy) will play Mr. Immortal, who cannot die, hence the name. Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People) will play Night Thrasher, a skilled fighter/vigilante with great technical skills and a suit of armor. Calum Worthy (Austin and Ally) will play Speedball, who has the ability to absorb kinetic energy from another dimension that allows him to transfer momentum. Matthew Moy (2 Broke Girls) will star as Microbe, who can communicate with microorganism within his vicinity. Kate Comer (The Comeback) will star as Debrii, who has “low-level” telekinesis.
Showrunner Kevin Biegel released a statement expressing excitement for the new cast:
“I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters. It’ll be a blast and an honor to create this show with each of them.”
The New Warriors will premiere on Freeform in 2018.
