Oh yes, there’s a new Star Wars movie coming out later this year, and in case you aren’t excited enough yet, here comes some buzz courtesy of D23. It was perhaps unreasonable to expect a new trailer, although it has been about three months since we got that first one, so in lieu of any completed footage, we got a three-minute, behind-the-scenes sneak peak into what might be expected in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In a video akin to the one Lucasfilm released in advance of The Force Awakens at Comic Con in 2015, this is a tight three-minutes to catch all the potential Easter eggs and reveals. For instance, we see both Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver fight training with their lightsabers, we see John Boyega‘s Finn in a mustard-coloured flight suit, and we see Laura Dern in a purple wig playing the second most enigmatic character she’s played in a franchise this year. So check out the new video below courtesy of Deadline.
Especially poignant at the end was the late great Carrie Fisher saying “It’s about family, and that’s what’s so powerful about it,” the pathos of which was kind of undermined with Admiral Akbar punning “It’s a wrap!” Oy.
Of course, several people were on hand in person at D23 to talk about the film. Mark Hamill, Ridley, Boyega, and Gwendoline Christie, along with new cast members Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro, and writer/director Rian Johnson. Despite the appearance of del Toro there was no juicy scoop about the identity of his character, or even whose side he’s on, but /Film reported that there was a character poster featuring del Toro in a brown robe with gold trim sitting in a chair on a spaceship. Make of that what you will.
As for the film itself, Hamill, who was inducted as a Disney Legend along with Fisher yesterday, says the film has “so many unexpected elements,” and that it’ll be “a real game-changer.” In fact, if there’s a message on The Last Jedi from D23, it seems to be forget everything you think you know about Star Wars movies.
We will find out all about that for ourselves when The Lat Jedi opens in theatres everywhere on December 15.
