As this is NerdBastards, it’s safe to assume anyone reading this is waiting with eager anticipation for any and all news related to Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One. The book celebrates everything Nerds love: video games, role playing games, science fiction and fantasy films, and a whole lot more. The news that Spielberg would be helming the production is nothing new, but little has been released about the production since that news broke and fans have been clicking madly online for any information they could find. Finally, after months of silence, a set phone has been released and anyone who has read the book will recognize the location immediately…
In Cline’s 2011 novel, Wade Watts is a poor young man growing up in the Stacks, a slum made up of mobile homes literally stacked on top of one another. Whenever he can get away, he would sneak off to get online into the Oasis and go to school. The Oasis is what everyone wishes Virtual Reality was today: completely immersive and an interactive Internet everyone can access.
Wade’s access is limited to his education and some chat rooms, but everyone on the planet who can get online spends most of their time looking for a series of Easter Eggs located throughout the Oasis. These were placed there by its creator, James Halliday and his company Gregarious Games. The winner takes all of Halliday’s billions and control over the Oasis. That’s all the plot detail needed here. Without further ado, here’s the picture:
There is no indication Spielberg’s adaptation will differ from the source material other than the usual book-to-film tactic of dropping some detail for time. That’s a concern to many fans since there is nothing but detail in the book. While the trailer isn’t going to be released until next week’s 2017 San Diego Comic-Con, Entertainment Weekly has released the photo, which has some serious detail of its own going on.
