In the grand scheme of things, we’re basically getting a Pacific Rim sequel by the skin of our teeth; the original in 2013 made just enough money at the Chinese box office to tip it into profitability. Still, you wouldn’t have guessed that given the way Pacific Rim: Uprising is now being promoted. It’s almost as if it’s one of the most hotly anticipated sequels out there. Of course Pacific Rim has its fans, and they should consider themselves teased for what’s about to come next in the battle between giant robots and giant aliens.
The Verge had the first teaser, which looks more like a commercial for the new year’s models of Jaegers, the giant robots piloted by the heroes in the first and second films. Your Jaeger spokesperson? Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, the character portrayed by Idris Elba in part one; Star Wars star John Boyega plays Jake in the new film.
In other Pacific Rim teasers, you can go to a viral website that allows you to download blueprints and schematics for the next generation of Jaegers, which follows the previous film’s proclivity for unusual names including Gypsy Avenger, Bracer Phoenix, and Titan Redeemer. The new robots look to be shinier and sleeker versions of the mechas seen in Pacific Rim, especially Gypsy Avenger, which is the immediate descendent of Gypsy Danger, the hero Jaeger of that first film.
Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, and Charlie Day co-star in the feature film debut of Steven S. DeKnight.
Pacific Rim: Uprising will be in theatres everywhere on February 23, 2018.
