Marvel Studios has long been a big presence at San Diego Comic Con, but in the last several years they’ve had to specialize. You can’t have one, big Marvel panel anymore, you’ve got to have one for the movies, and one for Inhumans, and yes, one for the Netflix series that fall under the general headline of The Defenders. The entire street-level hero team was on call at the con tonight revealing new footage, new details, and making new announcements.
First up, they screened a full trailer for Punisher, the spin-off from Daredevil starring Jon Bernthal as the man with a skull shirt prosecuting a one-man war on crime. The trailer has yet to appear online, but Deadline had the details:
In the trailer, Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher is seen playing the guitar with his daughter. His story is that his family was taken from him. We see the Punisher on the warpath, taking out bikers in rural Alabama, then snipering a drug lord in Juarez, Mexico, from a perch in El Paso.
Speaking of Punisher, he made a surprise appearance in the equally surprising screening of episode one of The Defenders. Again, according to Deadline, the first episode was shown to the delight of fans, opening with Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) saving an injured Punisher from the Hand. The episode then caught us up with Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), and introduced the audience to Alexandra, Sigourney Weaver’s antagonist, who, like Harold Meachum in Iron Fist, became entangled with the Hand when they used their evil to save her life from a terminal illness.
Speaking of Iron Fist, the series finally got tipped for a second season. Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb made the announcement (again, via Deadline), and suggested that Iron Fist’s Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick) would team up with Luke Cage’s Misty Knight (Simone Missick) in the course of that second season. Whether or not this will also mean a team-up between Cage and Fist, re-creating the classic comic Heroes for Hire duo, is yet to be determined (or revealed) apparently.
The Defenders launches in its entirety on August 18 on Netflix.
UPDATE: And now there’s a new Defenders trailer for all to see.
