Warner Bros. Animation has revealed today at San Diego Comic Con their plans for three upcoming films to take place in the DC Animated Universe and one of them will be a two-parter! The first to come out of the studio will be a Batman film followed by a new rendition of the Death and Rebirth of Superman (split into two films). Fans may recall that DC Animated and Warner Bros. already tackled the Death of Superman in their 2007 adaptation, Superman: Doomsday, but left a lot out given the 75-minute limitation of the medium. Now, that story will be told in its entirety as two separate films.
For Superman fans, they will get to see Death of Superman in 2018, which will be followed in 2019 by Reign of the Supermen, which is the title of the following storyline in the comes about the rise of numerous Superman characters following the apparent death of Kal-El. When the original comics came out in the 90s, DC introduced the characters: Steel, Cyborg Superman, Superboy, and the Last Son of Krypton. It wasn’t clear from the beginning of those books who each person truly was and while it was revealed years ago, we won’t be spoiling it here for anyone who wants to ‘catch up’ by watching the films.
On to the Dark Knight: DC and Warner Bros. announced that the next film to come out featuring Batman (after the previously announced Batman and Harley Quinn) will be titled Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. The film will be based on the original comic of the same name released by DC in 1989. That story was written by Brian Augustyn and penciled by Mike Mignola with inking provided by P. Craig Russell. The story is a reimagining of Batman in the Victorian age investigating the serial killer, Jack the Ripper. Here’s the official synopsis of the original comic:
In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight does have quite a legacy with DC Comics. It not only spawned a sequel, but it was truly the inspiration behind numerous other Elseworlds Tales to be released since. These books were similar in that they explored the familiar characters of DC Comics in unusual times and places.
Anyone interested in getting a sneak peek at the upcoming film can do so in the special features of the home media release for Batman and Harley Quinn, which is due out on August 29th of this year. Kevin Conroy will be returning to take on the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne alongside Melissa Rauch’s Harley Quinn and Loren Lester who will play Nightwing. The casting for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight hasn’t been announced, but it’s fairly certain that if Conroy isn’t brought back, the fans will riot.
