Ghost in the Shell was supposed to be a promising beginning to a slew of glossy, high-profile remakes of great anime classics, but before it was even released, it was doomed to failure. The “white washing” controversy concerning the casting of Scarlett Johansson sabotaged the film amongst even those who had never heard of the original anime Ghost, and combined with the negative reviews, there was almost no way that Ghost in the Shell was going to be even a borderline success. So considering all it demerits, why not give up and just make an honest trailer out of it?
All we have to say is, “Ouch.” But really, is there anything here that’s terribly outside the norm? Truly, it does seem like Hollywood is running out of things from the 80s and 90s to remake, and pretty soon all that will be left is Visionaries and The Get-a-Long Gang. It’s also true that Ghost in the Shell has been liberally borrowed from by several other movies, up-to and including The Matrix. And on top of that, this does truly seem like an amalgam of every character that Johansson has played so far from The Avengers to Under the Skin to Lost in Translation. And none of that gets into the icky controversy of her casting, which the above trailer deals with directly.
Alas, it’s also unlikely to get anyone else to run out and see the movie. Still, if you’re willing, Ghost in the Shell is currently available on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD.
