It took the folks responsible for The Simpsons 17 years to put out a film based on their hit property and it has been a decade since that film first came out. Talks of a sequel have been going on since that first film was released and it seems the yellow family of prime time just might be making a return to the silver screen and another seven years of waiting might not be in the cards.
At the end of the first Simpsons Movie, a sequel was teased when Maggie’s first word spoken in front of the family following the credits just happened to be “Sequel”. While plans have been discussed in the intervening decade, Nothing has been greenlit by the studio and it has a lot to do with the tough production of the first film. Director David Silverman had this to say in an interview with EW regarding the development of a second film:
“I’d love for there to be another one. We’re still a ways away from it. We talk about this and that. We’re thinking it over, but nothing’s happening just yet.…. It’s still daunting because it really knocked the stuffing out of us to do the movie and the show at the same time.”
Writer/producer Al Jean followed up with a tease about the next film:
“I’d say [it’s in] the very earliest stages. I certainly am cautious about a couple things. I wouldn’t want it to be risky in terms of budget, and I would not want it to be anything that we did purely for the money. I would want it to be a really great movie. I personally feel no need for another one unless it’s great.”
While these statements are somewhat vague, they do lead us to believe that a follow-up film is a possibility. Right now, The Simpsons is gearing up to begin its 29th season and it has also been renewed for a historic 30th season set to begin next fall. While the show remains popular, many fans believe the show jumped the shark years ago and is ready to fade out of the zeitgeist once and for all. This makes the prospect of another film a risky proposition, but it would probably still earn enough at the box office to justify the production and release.
Regardless, true fans have been waiting for a decade to see another Simpsons film, which would be an incredible way to end the 30-year run of the series.
