We’ve seen countless iterations of Batman’s greatest rogue, The Joker. We’ve seen Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s Batman, Heath Ledger in the Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and recently Jared Leto in Suicide Squad (and the upcoming Gotham City Sirens movie). Of course, there’s the OG from the Adam West series, Caesar Romero and countless voice actors for various DC animated movies (Mark Hamill remains king though!). The Joker is without a doubt one of the most fascinating characters throughout comic book history. However, we really haven’t learned much of his origin or his history. Until now…
Deadline reports that a Joker spin-off film is in development that will detail the origin of the Clown Prince of Crime. Todd Phillips (The Hangover) is attached to write and direct the film. Scott Silver (8 Mile) will also co-write the film with Phillips. To add even more interest and intrigue to the films, Martin Scorsese (yes that Martin Scorsese) will be a producer of the film.
While this will be a DC/Warner Bros movie, there’s been no word if our most recent Joker Jared Leto will be in this movie. He’s currently confirmed for Suicide Squad 2 as well as Gotham City Sirens but there has been no word if he will appear in this movie. With it being an origin story movie, it’s likely that a younger actor could be chosen for the coveted role. With Leto and “Jerome” on Gotham, it’s already a crowded field for The Joker and might prove confusing for audiences. We will see at this Joker movie goes into production.
