Nine years ago, two onscreen heroes had a brief conversation after the credits rolled for Iron Man. That one, small interaction between Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has spawned a plotline that has transcended numerous individual movies and is about to meet its uncertain end. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the first ever trailer for Avengers: Infinity War!
Wow. Go ahead and watch it again, we’ll wait.
There’s a lot to unpack from the trailer. Some questions are raised, like who or what is fighting with Black Panther?
Whatever, this is, it has four arms and seems very angry. In one part of the trailer, we can see an army of these things rushing to meet the Wakandan Army in battle.
The trailer also reveals that Thanos will get his hands on at least 3 of the Infinity Stones, granting him power over Space (blue), Power (purple), and sadly, Mind (yellow).
Unfortunately, the Mind Stone is currently embedded in the forehead of Vision.
There’s not much to go on, but things are not going well for Vision in this shot. It appears that someone is using Loki’s staff to remove the Mind Stone from Vision. Seen looking somewhat haggard in the trailer, it could very well be Loki himself.
Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios and God of All Things Marvel, stated in an interview this week with Vanity Fair , that Infinity War would be a “finale, of sorts”. We all know what this means, even though we don’t want to speak the words: some of our heroes will not survive Infinity War.
On the reality side of things, rumors have been flying for years about how RDJ could not play Tony Stark forever. Even though this is a tough pill for fans to swallow, it makes sense. The role of a superhero is one filled with intense action and stunt work. Robert Downey Jr. is 52 years old. There is no denying his spryness, but it would be unreasonable to ask so much of an actor for an indefinite amount of time. While, there has been no definitive word, it is easy to surmise that some of the other actors would also be interested in branching out to other things after playing their respective characters for nearly a decade.
On the story side of things, the Infinity War comic version does not go well for most of the heroes as Thanos becomes all-powerful by wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. Marvel could easily write in an exit for some of the original Avengers as a result of the battle with Thanos, but until the movie comes out, everything is up in the air.
One thing the trailer clearly states: Thanos is coming and he will be a force to be reckoned with.
Avengers: Infinity War smashes its way into theaters in May 2018.
