Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi has proven to be the most divisive Star Wars film ever. While it earned generally favorable reviews from critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes), the general audience was a little more even split (47% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes). Those most vocal about the film have been hard-core Star Wars fans who were not fans of many of the plot details that happened in the film. Depending on who you ask, The Last Jedi was either a bold new direction for the Star Wars franchise, or something that finally destroyed fans’ childhoods. Many who were displeased with the film did not like the direction Luke Skywalker went, even Luke himself, Mark Hamil wasn’t too pleased with the direction his beloved character went.
Another problem fans had with the film was the reveal about Rey’s parentage. In The Force Awakens, Rey was very concerned with returning to Jakuu and waiting for her parents to “come back” for her. This led many to believe that her parents were of some importance. Many had worked up their own theories as to who Rey’s parents would be. Was it Luke? Was she a relative of Obi-Wan Kenobi? Could she be related to Palpatine? One thing about building your own theories in your head, is that you can be disappointed when it doesn’t go according to plan. In The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren revealed to Rey that she wasn’t the daughter of someone of importance in the Star Wars universe. In fact, her parents were just “nobodies” who sold her off into servitude for beer money. While it was a unique answer for one of the sequel trilogy’s theories it was proven to be a disappointment for some fans. Rian Johnson revealed that he was given no direction from JJ Abrams as to what he wanted Rey’s parents to be, so he was free to do what he wanted. In fact, Johnson said that he and Abrams had a chat about the reveal and JJ came to the same conclusion. Now it looks like that might not completely be the case….
As reported by Geek Tyrant, according to actor Simon Pegg, who starred in the rebooted Star Trek films as well as The Force Awakens, there was originally different plans for who Rey’s parents will be, and Johnson’s change “kind of undone” by the events of The Last Jedi. Reporter John Horowitz was able to let fans know what Pegg told him.
Simon Pegg confirms what I’ve long heard, JJ had a much different plan for Rey’s parentage. “I know what JJ kind of intended or at least was being chucked around. I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by the last one. There was some talk of a relevant lineage for her.” https://t.co/AksaUK35PQ

Now with Abrams returning to write and direct the final film in the sequel trilogy, he may be able to change the reveal. After all, the Jedi/Sith tell things from “a certain point of view” and perhaps Rey’s parents could be “nobody” from Kylo Ren’s perspective. Either that, or we’re stuck with Rey’s parents as reported in The Last Jedi. We’ll just have to wait until Episode IX to find out.
