Rejoice! – Brooklyn Nine Nine Gets Sixth Season At NBC

Anyone that enjoys the Marvel Universe knows that all deaths aren’t really final.  On this past Thursday FOX cancelled several shows as we reported previously.  While other shows did get a good deal of press and fan reaction, no show had the sudden outpouring of grief like Brooklyn Nine Nine.  The show, which stars Andy Samberg who was integral to the rise of Youtube (due to his SNL digital shorts made with his Lonely Island partners) has been picked up by NBC.  Andy’s Jake Peralta is a detective in the 99th Precinct.  The show has several other stand-outs like Terry Crews, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti (who is married to Jordan Peele) and Andre Braugher

It was reported within hours that negotiations had begun with the likes of TBSHuluNBC, and Netflix all vying to revive the show for a sixth season.  Hulu was seen as a great fit since it owns the SVOD rights for the show.  Hulu had already rescued another FOX comedy The Mindy Project in 2015. Once Hulu dropped out of the running NBC quickly made a deal that will bring the show back for a 13 episode sixth season in 2019.

NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt released a statement announcing the renewal, “Ever since we sold this show to Fox I’ve regretted letting it get away, and it’s high time it came back to its rightful home. Mike Schur, Dan Goor, and Andy Samberg grew up on NBC and we’re all thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest, and best cast comedies in a long time will take its place in our comedy line-up. I speak for everyone at NBC, here’s to the Nine-Nine!”

The cast and crew started a tweet storm to show their excitement and appreciation of the fans:

Dan Goor (creator and producer of the show): “Hey everyone, just wanted to say no big deal but…NBC JUST PICKED #Brooklyn99 UP FOR SEASON 6!!!  Thanks in no small part to you, the best fans in the history of the world!”

The Lonely Island: “Thank you to everyone for the crazy outpouring of support.  It means the world to us.  It wouldn’t have happened without you.”

Terry Crews:  “Terry loves @NBC.”

Joe Lo Truglio: “It’s NINE o’clock and the NINE NINE is now on NBC.  We are so grateful for our fans.  THANK YOU.  You made this happen.  And we’re excited abotu this amazing new chapter for Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

The fifth season finale airs on May 20th.
