Most fans of Star Wars felt that the force was strong with the newest installment Solo: A Star Wars Story when they heard that Donald Glover was taking on the role of Lando Calrissian. Until that moment no one believed anyone could step into the shoes of Colt 45 ad man, Billie Dee Williams. The film isn’t even out yet, but word is that Lando will soon have his own film.
At the Cannes film festival, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, gave a statement to Premiere France that seemed to confirm the idea:
“We think that the next spinoff will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian. Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca but Lando will be next.”
That thought is understandable since Glover apparently steals the spotlight in every scene he appears in. However, it turns out that a Lucasfilm rep refuted it, saying Kennedy was not translated correctly. The correction states that they are, “interested in making a Lando movie when it is relevant.”
That means it could be next but it could also be somewhere down the line. One possible interpretation is that Lando will follow when the Han Solo centric films are done. Whether or not direct sequels to Solo happen would depend on audience response and box office receipts.
Based on fan response to the trailers and the casting of Glover, Lucasfilm would be smart to capitalize on his star power.
His series Atlanta, which he created, produces, and stars in has won a lot of critical acclaim and awards (AFI, Critic’s Choice, Emmy, Golden Globe, and WGA). It is currently in the midst of its second season on FX.
His alter ego Childish Gambino, has also seen a great deal of success winning the 2018 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
Glover recently hosted SNL and did double duty as musical guest. His skit as Lando was classic.
