When Gillian Anderson announced she would not be returning to Starz hit show American Gods, the question arose whether they would recast the role or go in a new direction. Today that question was answered. The show will introduce a new character that will replace Gillian’s character, Media.
American Gods is based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name. It follows the story of Shadow (Ricky Whittle), a young man who lost his wife in a car wreck right before he is to be released from prison. Shadow ends up in the middle of a war between the old gods and the new. Media tried to win over Shadow several times. She appeared as Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe and David Bowie to Shadow as she tries to win him away from Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) and the old gods.
Anderson famously left due to the exit of creators/showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. The series seemed to be in trouble, but now that Jesse Alexander has taken the reigns it appears to be moving forward with the casting of Gillian’s replacement in the pantheon.
Kahyn Kim will step into the role of New Media. The part is listed as, “the goddess of global content, a cyberspace chameleon, who is a master of manipulation.” It is still unsure if the replacement of Gillian’s character will be explained on screen.
Two other new cast members were also announced.
Dean Winters (John Wick, Brooklyn 99, Oz) will play Mr. Town. He is enlisted by Mr. World (Crispen Glover) to track down Shadow and Wednesday. The cast listing states: “his brutal efficiency and technique just may get him the answers to his curious questions.”
Devery Jacobs will play the recurring role of Sam Black Crow, a college student who crosses paths with Shadow. Sam is “spiritually cynical” and “lives life with a fierce confidence and openness.”
Ian McShane, Ricky Whittle, Crispin Glover, and Emily Browning (Laura, Shadow’s wife) are all slated to return. It is likely that Pablo Schreiber (Mad Sweeney), Yetide Badaki (Bilquis) and Orlando Jones (Mr. Nancy) will also return for the second season.
