Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker might have been divisive for the fan community…but for DC and Warner Brothers it was good enough for a second round. Leto first played The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad and promptly stole every scene he was in. This is one of two Joker films looking to start production in the next year or so. The DCEU is starting to get as crowded as the MCU.
Variety reported that Leto is set to star in and executive produce the untitled stand alone film. Most fans were upset with how little screen time Leto had in Suicide Squad. The trailers had given the impression that he played a major part in the story line but he ended up with only around twenty minutes of screen time.
Giving him his own film would make sense as it would strengthen the connections between the various projects in development. It would also increase the draw for a potential Harley vs The Joker film that has also been rumored to be done at some point.
Suicide Squad 2 is slated to go into production next year, so it is likely this film (which is still searching for a writer and director) will happen sometime after that. Before that happens Leto’s Little Monster, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is already getting her own spin-off from Suicide Squad that will be a “Birds of Prey” film. That film is slated to be a team up of Harley, Batgirl, Black Canary and other possible DC female heroes.
There are also reports of a Gotham City Sirens film penned by Suicide Squad director David Ayer. That film would probably introduce Catwoman and Poison Ivy to the DCEU.
The studio has already been developing a Joker origin tale from film maker Todd Phillips, that will be produced by Martin Scorsese. That film has Joaquin Phoenix slated to don the purple and green. The studio stated when this film was announced that Leto’s Joker would still live on elsewhere.
