The new animated Spider-Man movie trailer has been a pretty big hit. With 16M views on YouTube in a matter of days since the official trailer released. Several familiar names, or rather voices, star in the movie. But who are all the names behind the masks we see in the trailer? The casual Spider-Fan may not be familiar with the new Spider-Man on the big screen or the other faces featured in the trailer. NerdBastards is here to help break down the names and actors that will bring Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse to life.
First, the trailer. Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ official trailer premiered on Jun 6, 2018.
Peter Parker. Even most non-nerdy Muggles know the name. But how is ‘Into The Spider-Verse’ Peter different? Jake Johnson (New Girl) voices Peter Parker. The trailer doesn’t reveal much about Peter yet, so it’s hard to say how this movie differs from the Ultimate storyline. The Ultimate comics were a way for Marvel to bring out a new imagining to their characters with fresh origins and modern takes, without alienating the standard comics, known as universe 616. In the Ultimate universe, Peter died. He had a mysterious resurrection later, but his death left his life in shambles, the world knew Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man, and it was safer for Peter to lay low as he searched for answers about his return. In the meantime, another Spider-Man emerged. Peter helped him take down Norman Osborn and passed on the identity and web-shooters of Spider-Man to a worthy successor…
The movie focuses on what a lot of fans know as Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales. A second generation legacy character created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli for Marvel’s Ultimate universe. After Marvel‘s “Secret Wars” storyline in 2015, Miles and his family found themselves drawn into the 616 universe. Confused yet? Both Miles and Peter Parker share the mantle of Spider-Man. Shameik Moore (The Get Down) voices Miles. Miles has been a member of Champions and The Avengers since his inclusion into the 616 universe. Unlike many POC and legacy characters, Miles has seen less backlash from the more toxic members of the comic book community and has been an important addition to the Spider-Man mythos as representation for POC.
Another mask we see in the brief flashing of fight scenes is Prowler, also known as Aaron Davis. In the Ultimate universe, Prowler had ties to Miles, discovers his identity, and is later transferred over to the 616 along with Miles. Prowler is voiced by Mahershala Ali (Luke Cage) and is sure to be close to the Ultimate version, so no spoilers will be mentioned here in fear of him being an important part of Miles’ story in the movie.
Last but not least, we have Spider-Gwen, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee). Known in her universe as Spider-Woman, Gwen Stacy of Earth-65 (an altogether different universe for the Ultimate story-line and the 616 universes) was bitten by a radioactive spider while Peter Parker did not. Peter, bullied to the point of breaking, develops a serum that transforms him into a lizard mutant. In a battle with a crazed lizard-Peter, Gwen kills him with an accidental fatal shove. As he transforms back, Gwen runs from the scene, making it appear that Spider-Woman is responsible for the murder of a teenage boy, thus making her a public enemy. But what is Spider-Gwen doing with the Ultimate versions of Spider-Man, in a whole separate universe? That’s anyone’s guess until more information about the movie is released. But the title implies that there could be many more Spider-Folk making an appearance.
Other voices in the movie include Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as The Kingpin, Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie) as Aunt May, Luna Lauren Velez (Dexter) and Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) as Miles Morales’ parents. The movie is set for a December 14, 2018 release date.
