CBS All Access has debuted the action-packed official trailer for the second season of Star Trek: Discovery following the panel for the series at Comic Con.
The trailer features the return of Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham and introduced a new alien character named Linus, while showing us a few other new cast members.
We also got a first look at some snazzy new Starfleet crew uniforms that look very familiar.
Showrunner Alex Kurtzman confirms we will be seeing Spock in the new season which will have a ‘family’ theme unlike the war theme of the first season.
Rebecca Romijn joins the cast as ‘Number One,’ the character played by Majel Barrett in ‘The Cage’ who served under Captain Pike before Kirk took command of the USS Enterprise.
Romijn is joined by fellow newcomers Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike (played by Jeffrey Hunter in the original pilot), and Tig Notaro as Chief Engineer Reno with several new junior crew members as well.
Here is the trailer in all it’s glory:
The trailer reveals a bit more of what to expect from the upcoming season, which appears to begin with Captain Christopher Pike coming aboard and taking command of the USS Discovery after a series of mysterious “red bursts” are detected, simultaneously spread out across 30,000 light years. Burnham later claims “Spock is linked to these signals.”
The new alien, Linus is seen at the end of the trailer with some kind of alien flu.
The second season is slated to premiere in early 2019, likely January.
Also on the way are Star Trek: Short Treks, a four-episode series of shorts that will roll out beginning in December. Each 10-15 minute short will consist of a stand-alone story exploring key characters and themes. These include more of the backstories of Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Saru (Doug Jones) and Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson) along with one about new character Craft (Aldis Hodge) who awakens on a deserted ship.
