Buffy The Vampire Slayer fans rejoice! Fox is moving forward with plans to reboot our favorite slayer, only a little different this time. While Buffy may not be the bouncy blonde valley girl we’re used to, our Lord and Savior Joss Whedon will be around to guide the new slayer’s show as it finds its footing.
Rumors of a BtVS reboot have been tossed around for years, but as recently as March, Fox CEO Gary Newman mentioned the show and its potential for a revival, saying “I think if you look in our library, Buffy is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back.”
And now it looks like it could be a reality. Joss comes in as executive director, with writing and show running going to Monica Owusu-Breen, a writer known for Charmed, Alias, Lost, Fringe and Agents of SHIELD, which she worked on with Joss.
Also of note, the report says that while there’s no casting news, they are looking at Buffy being cast as black with a more inclusive cast. A black slayer isn’t unheard of and could likely be a breath of fresh air for the franchise.
It’s unknown exactly how much control Whedon will have, or could have, with the show, as he will be serving as writer, director, executive producer and showrunner for a new HBO drama. The Nevers, “an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.” Though him returning to Buffy isn’t really a shock, since he’s also began writing the Buffy comics.
Buffy Alum Alyson Hannigan spoke recently in an interview saying that a reboot with an entirely new cast would “hurt”, and she’d like to be involved. She even seemed excited about the idea of a continuation of Buffy.
