The original Hellboy movies hold a strong and passionate fanbase. Ron Perlman cemented himself in fans minds as Hellboy. Admittedly, Perlman is a tough act to follow. But David Harbour (Stranger Things) steps up to give it a shot. The first trailer for the new Hellboy is receiving mixed reviews – some are excited for the continuing of the franchise, while others feel that if it’s not Perlman andb then it’s not worth watching. With heavy hitters like Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Daniel Dae Kim and relative newcomer Sasha Lane, the new Hellboy has a lot of potential. But can it get past the initial fan backlash? What are the fans biggest complaints? Check out the trailer and judge for yourself.

Director Neil Marshall has credits on fan favorites like Lost in Space, Westworld, Timeless, Hannibal, Constantine, Game of Thrones and Black Sails, as well as cult-favorite Dog Soldiers. Screenwriter Andrew Cosby has penned 77 episodes of fan favorite Eureka.

Even with all the cred the cast and crew bring to the table, there are still those who lament the loss of Ron Perlman and Guillermo del Toro from the franchise. But fans should be honest with themselves. Things didn’t line up for those two to return, and one isn’t going to do so without the other. If you want more Hellboy, you’re going to have to embrace a different vision of the character. No doubt Harbour and Marshall are fans of the original movies. There’s no doubt they will try to capture the fun and the attitude of first films while making this one their own.

Ron Perlman and co-star Selma Blair reacted to the trailer release. Blair posted to her Instagram with a picture from the set of the original Hellboy, espousing praise for Perlman, calling him “Forever my Red. You are always the realest deal, a diamond.” Perlman himself took to Instagram to remind fans that they can stream the original movies on Netflix. Perlman is known for razzing reboots and movies similar to ones he’s done. It’s often good-natured ribbing to stir up fans of his. Perlman has been a fan favorite of multiple franchises over the years and has a strong and vocal following.

Another complaint seen frequently is the make-up and special effects. The movie is still listed as in post-production. We may not be seeing a finished product with this trailer.

Everyone loved the first couple of Hellboy films. Ron Perlman is a national fucking treasure. But we need to make room for more interpretations of the character and franchise if we want Hellboy to continue.

Without further ado, here’s the trailer for Hellboy. Let’s do this.
