James Gunn has got to be riding high, with his newest movie Brightburn releasing and being reinstated as director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3. But let’s not forget that he’s also helming Suicide Squad 2. Lots of rumors surround the movie. Is It a reboot or a sequel? What characters will be in it? How short will Harley Quinn’s shorts be? With the departure of Will Smith, other actors have spoken up about their roles in the movie. And it begs the question – if you have returning actors playing returning characters, can it really be a reboot?

With Idris Elba stepping into the role of Deadshot after Will Smith’s departure, the idea of a reboot seems plausible.

Then Collider.com reported on a list of expected characters, pending Gunn’s rewrite. Names like Ratcatcher, Kingshark, Polka-Dot Man, and Peacemaker. If anyone can turn that team into an even bigger hit than the first Suicide Squad, it’s James Gunn.

So, a new Deadshot and team to back him up. Okay. Still sounds like a reboot, right?

But many expect Margo Robbie’s Harley Quinn to make an appearance. And it makes sense. She stole the film. She’s launching other franchises using that momentum. They’d be stupid not to bring her back.

If Margo Robbie’s Harley is in it, can it still be a real reboot? Maybe this is a different Deadshot? Someone else with the name?

There’s still conflicting reports over whether or not Joel Kinnaman will return as Rick Flagg. Then we get the new news about Jai Courtney returning as Captain Boomerang. If Jai, Margo, AND (potentially) Joel are coming back… Idris being a different Deadshot or not is irrelevant. You now have characters who will, presumably, share a screen together who have a history, played by the same actors. How do you reboot that without alienating fans, essentially wiping the memory of the characters?

Now the news that this is a reboot comes from producer Peter Safran.

That being said, he could have misspoke or been outright wrong. Or he means in the spirit of tonality and feel of the movie.

Either way, James Gunn coming in with some of these characters is amazing and however they do it, it’s sure to bring in fans.

What do you think? Is this really a reboot? Could James Gunn make that work? Or was the producer mistaken?
