Ten Nerdy Valentine’s Day Gifts

sagan

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and although I hate to participate in promoting a Hallmark holiday, I do think nerds need good romantic gifts. So whether you keep these ideas around for a rainy day or if you want to wow your crush for Valentine’s Day, here goes:

Steampunk Robots

steampunkrobot

I just ran across this awesome seller on Etsy. From his bio:

I was born in Gallup New Mexico August 31, 1959. I was given some plastiline type clay (oil based clay) when I was very young around two or three years of age and found that my God had bestowed on me a talent even at this every age.

Well, that talent comes with some awesome taste! For you steampunk fans out there, you’ll be delighted at the price of these robots too…just $45 to $70! They’re made from chrome and other various metals, some of which is reclaimed. Nerd points go to this guy for spending his time and efforts making robots we can all fall in love with! More robots after the jump. (more…)

Ten Subversive Knits — Knittas Hit the Streets

116_2996

Not sure if you know, but there’s been a movement for the last several years to bring knitting to the street. You’ve seen spray-painted graffiti, murals, sculptures and all kinds of other forms of subversive “street” art. But have you seen the latest craze hitting the street? Check out some Guerilla Knitting going on where you’d least expect it.

Pornicorn? Yes, That Will Do

pornicornImageThe magic of the Unicorn has stolen my words. Most writers experience a lack of words once or twice in their careers, and I am battling the overwhelming inner silence at this very moment. Please join me here in my cone of silence. Semi-naked man unicorning. This video doubles as birth control too, just a handy hint. I repeat: I just don’t have words for this yet.

I’ve been sitting here in front of this blank page wondering how long to give myself to come up with the right thing to say about what you presumably just watched. But what I think I’d be better off doing is planning some kind of “Nerds Unite, Take Back the Unicorn” event for all of us who survived it. Because we will be re-living it for years and years to come. I just have so many questions. So many questions.

Then the silence becomes deafening: (more…)

January’s Nerd-Of-The-Month Profile: Bathesda Softworks Concept Artist Ray Lederer

rayLederer02

I like to draw monsters, gargantuan spaceships, tiny people, huge people, crab-like aliens, tubes, unfortunate biomechanics, sleek cars, strange fashion, and crates of varying shapes and sizes.” — Ray Lederer

Ray Lederer, illustrator, concept artist and all-around sci-fi nerd happily draws creatures and monsters all day….and he gets payed to do it. Not only that, he’s worked for some of entertainment’s biggest players including DC, Marvel, and Sony contributing to Star Wars, Tales from the Crypt RPG and Battletech/Mechwarrior RPG books and now Bathesda (of Fallout fame). Cool, in a totally nerdy way. That’s why he’s January pick for Nerd of the Month.

Watch along below as Ray works his magic, and I’ll meet you afterwards for some Q&A with our nerdy little art star of the video game world: (more…)

Fist Pumps and Mustaches: Super Mario Bros. Meets Jersey Shore

jerseyshoregirls

Nerds + The Situation = Awesomeness. The only thing that would improve this Super Mario Bros/Jersey Shore mash-up: the real cast of Jersey Shore. Really, what else would THE REAL CAST OF JERSEY SHORE actually IMPROVE? One hand clapping, right? Check out what would go down if Super Mario Bros. & company landed on the Jersey Shore. I hereby request a re-make with the real cast of the show, seriously. Just put the real cast in the house with the characters and let the cameras roll. I bet not much would end up on the cutting room floor of that shoot.

There’s a world of horrible artwork out there in the realm of Star Trek fan art. Go grab a glass of Romulan Ale and enjoy a little stroll through this fan art gallery.

Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland Illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia

aliceCamilleRoseGarcia

Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland illustrated by prolific artist and star of the low-brow art world Camille Rose Garcia will be available in print on February 2nd. Have a look at this preview of the work with narration by the artist herself. Check out the behind-the-scenes aspects of what goes into Garcia’s process and peer into the collection of weird and nerdy toys and objects she uses for inspiration. Pretty strange stuff. I can’t wait to buy a copy of this classic story with the badass artwork of Camille Rose Garcia.

You can see more of Camille’s work at her website HERE. If you’re not already a fan you will be. Especially if you’re a fan of  Mark Ryden, Elizabeth McGrath, Robert Williams, Gary Panter or any of the LA Juxtapoz-style artists. She’s the stuff we nerds dream of. I can’t wait till her work comes alive on the big screen one of these days. Mark my words, it will happen.
