Saturday’s tragic news that TV’s Batman, Adam West, had died after a brief battle with leukaemia hit the fan community hard. It didn’t matter that West’s Batman wasn’t the Darkest Knight, that he wasn’t a broody and disturbed misanthrope that poured years of rage and grief into beating the tar our of criminals, he was, to many, the Batman of a generation. As always, there’s a camaraderie amongst superheroes, even amongst Batmen, and among the numerous people to state their grief for the loss of West are those that took up his mantle in the cape and cowl. An icon of nerd culture and the man behind easily the most distinctive and unique Batman portrayals ever broadcast, Adam West will always have a special place in hearts of people all over the world. As well as being at the core of all the camp and colourful nostalgia of nerd culture, he was famously cheerful and friendly, not to mention pro-active well past the age at which many people retire. Today it was announced by a representative of the West family that, at the age of 88, Adam West has died after “after a short battle with leukemia”. (more…)
The overwhelming majority of fan interactions, be they on the street, at a con, or at the local comic shop, are very, very positive. Heartwarming, even. And that’s why when something like the following Crimestoppers report happens, it feels like an even greater betrayal. The alleged perpetrator has been a friend of Sansweet for over 20 years, but with the crime seemingly solved there’s still one thing left to do: to help Sansweet get his stuff back. (more…)

Rick Moranis is a superstar comedic actor with lots of hits to his name, but for the last 20 years Moranis has focused more on life than career, taking an indefinite “hiatus” from Hollywood to focus on his children after his wife died from breast cancer. He’s stayed active by recording a couple of comedy albums, and doing a couple of voiceovers, and although he’s woe to admit it, Moranis has more or less retired from the business. But things change. And this summer, Moranis will be returning to his signature role to lend an old friend a little help. (more…)

In real life, Johnny Depp‘s had some problems lately, the most recent being a court battle with a former business manager that accuses Depp of being a spend-thrift who’s wildly loose with his own cash. When life gets you down, dress like a pirate apparently. That’s what Depp did last week when he payed a surprise visit to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland dressed as his Pirates of the Caribbean movie series character Captain Jack Sparrow to entertain visitors to the park. Naturally, pandemonium ensued because everybody still loves Captain Jack when he’s doing his Captain Jack thing. (more…)

“The $20 billion toy industry is getting drunk on movies.” That’s the opening line from a New York Post article about how there are so many blockbusters coming out now that they’re having a negative effect on the all-important toy sales. Nobody can enjoy the toys they buy, because before you know it, you have to buy a whole new bunch of new toys. The toy industrial complex represents $20 billion a year in sales, but with 30 big movies coming out this year, each with their own accompanying toy lines, the question must be asked: is the industry hurting itself with an abundance of plenty?
