It looks like Phoenix Comicon 2017 is starting off with a bang, although thankfully not an actual bang as police arrested a body armored man carrying a shotgun, three pistols, and a knife on the first day. This incident has caused the convention management to ban all props for the rest of the convention. (more…)
TOY REVIEW: Luke Skywalker Rogue Group Snowspeeder Pilot 1/6th Scale Figure From Sideshow Collectibles
Is Luke Skywalker the best Jedi that ever lived? That’s a question that inspires endless debates and one that will not be answered here. But just for the record, he did go from orphan farmer boy to galaxy-saving Jedi in just three movies. Took down the Death Star with his eyes closed. Turned his evil dad good again. Oh, and he gives awesome piggy back rides. We’re here today to not talk about Luke the Jedi, but Luke the pilot. Now, we wouldn’t be so bold to say one is cooler/better than the other but in terms of what his actions as a pilot meant for the Rebels and, well, the galaxy pilot Luke is pretty dope.
While it’s a far cry from sniping Womp rats in a T-16 you can now have Luke decked out in full pilot gear in your home. Technically, there have been lots of Rebel Pilot Luke toys made over the years (lots!), but none quite like this 1/6th figure from Sideshow Collectibles. (more…)
Conversations in Cosplay: From the Convention Floor to SyFy’s ‘Cosplay Melee’ The Rise Of Becka Noel
For so many years, cosplay was a niche hobby even among the global nerd community. It is only in the past few years that it has gathered mainstream attention and, for some of the early attempts at introducing it to a wider audience, not all of it was good. This year, Syfy showcased cosplay in an entirely new way with its show Cosplay Melee. It focussed on the creative drive and the passion felt by everyone who makes the effort to step into the shoes of their favourite characters by bringing pop culture’s most fantastic costumes to life.
The show wouldn’t have been anywhere near as successful if it wasn’t for the dedication of the cosplayers who strutted their stuff on the Cosplay Melee catwalk. Becka Noel was one of the creators who took the leap from convention floor to international television and captured the imaginations of nerds all over the world with her art.
We spoke to Becka to find out how the show has changed her work in cosplay and what she could possibly have lined up to follow it. (more…)
When top cosplayers strut their stuff on stage or the convention floor, all flashing armour and skin tight spandex and story accurate props, they seem like the most confident people in the world. They step into the shoes of their favourite characters and, for a moment, they leave behind the stresses of the real world in favour of the effortless cool of their new identity. The excitement of seeing these characters come to life is only heightened knowing that the person underneath the suit is a fan just like everyone else at the convention. (more…)
One of those hobbies that requires buckets of passion, a flair for creativity and the confidence to show off your work, cosplay can be a daunting thing to get into. It’s the kind of thing you have to be prepared to devote tons of time and likely a fair bit of money to in order to get the most out of it. Once you’ve vaulted those hurdles, many cosplayers will tell you there’s hardly a more fulfilling hobby or more supportive community out there, even if you a little hesitant to jump in at the deep end first time round.
PixelPantz Cosplay is the artist that very nearly wasn’t, if one awesome friend hadn’t been so convincing. We spoke to her about what finally persuaded her to give it a go and the creative adventure she’s been on ever since.
Conversations In Cosplay: Helena Steele On Who Should Play Poison Ivy In Gotham City Sirens, Consent In The Cosplay Community and Her ‘Stupid Sexy Psyduck’ Going Viral
Every cosplayer, no matter how new or inexperienced, is at their core a creative person. A lot of imagination goes into taking a character off a screen or out of a comic book and recreating it in the real world, particularly if you have the skills to raft it to suit your own physical characteristics. The cosplayers that really stand out, though, are the ones that go above and beyond to make their costumes unique. The ones who mash together hugely different characters and themes to create a bizarrely familiar yet very distinct cosplay. The ones who find the least sexy thing in all of popular culture and find a way to confuse all the boners.
Helena Steele is one such cosplayer, and has been blowing minds with her original twists on awesome characters since she first made the move from modeling to cosplay. (more…)
Ability To Learn Lines No Longer Necessary For Top Hollywood Acting Roles – As Long As You Are Johnny Depp
Some pretty crazy stuff can – and often does – go down when you’ve been famous since you were a hot young Hollywood teenager and now have more money and freedom and influence than you know what to do with. Unlike most of the global population, you can buy nightclubs just so your band can perform there and, no matter how awful you are, there’s still the chance that Alice Cooper will join you on stage. You can make increasingly cringe-induing movies because you and your best buddy have enough of a reputation that film studios will throw money at you because why not? (more…)
For a movie that is so broadly accessible to viewers of all ages, there is plenty in Guardians of the Galaxy and its recent sequel that appeals to the baser instinct of many hot blooded adults. Front man Chris Pratt went from being the awkward, chubby sidekick that was Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation to a smoking hot muscle-bound beast for this role. If he’s too lean for your taste, there’s always the throbbing bulk of Dave Bautista‘s Drax. The pair share the billing with easily one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, Zoe Saldana, who is no less stunning for being painted green from head to toe. (more…)
You can’t look at the news without hearing about hacking. Let’s face it, we live in a digital world and as more and more information is in the cloud, the more it is susceptible to exploitation. Hell, there are those that think the most recent presidential election was hacked, so the idea is totally in the air. As our banks, our Facebook accounts, and everything else is vulnerable to hacking, so is the entertainment industry, and not just celebrities’ nudes. The most recent high-profile hacking done was when Sony was hacked, revealing all sorts of details about the movie studios. It looks like there’s a new hack, and this time, there are demands.
