A lot of Spider-Man movies have been released in the past fifteen years. Andrew Garfield’s incarnation of the web-slinger launched just four years after Tobey Maguire hung up the cobwebbed cowl. Instead of finishing The Amazing Spider-Man series, the iconic character has instead swung into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with yet another reboot now due for 2017. While it’s easy to see why some fans would be reluctant to get excited about another retelling of the same story so soon, a lot of the criticism already levelled at Spiderman: Homecoming has nothing to do with the potential lack of originality. If there is such a thing as an expert on race and casting in Hollywood, George Takei would definitely be in the running. He’s enjoyed a long and vaunted career, which of course includes all his years on the bridge of the Enterprise as Star Trek’s Sulu. Takei knows well the powerful message in casting minorities, after all, he played a character of Japanese descent on American TV less than two decades after World War Two, and more than that, Sulu sat in a position of authority, and in time when Asian actors are still struggling to get their fair share of the spotlight, that’s saying something. Have you seen Serenity? Well if you’re a fan of this site, I assume that you have. Anyway, you will surely remember what a compelling villain that Chiwetel Ejiofor made in the part of the Operative, the bloodless functionary of the galactic parliament who will do anything to protect their secrets. It’s was a star-making turn, or at least it would have been if more people had seen Serenity, but it certainly made people who did go to the trouble to watch Serenity stand up and take notice. One of those people must have been Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, or Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, because they’ve cast Ejiofor in an unnamed role that has now been revealed to be the villainous Baron Mordo. Now that the important yet drawn out and tedious task of casting the titular character in Doctor Strange has been resolved – Another round of applause for Benedict Cumberbatch everyone!!! – we get to the real meat of the casting conundrum: who will play The Ancient One. Okay, so that may not be the most talked about bit of casting in the process seeing as how the man that teaches Strange all about his magical, mystical powers doesn’t exactly play a huge part in the story, but in the Marvel U there are no small parts, only small actors. To prove that old theater axiom, it’s been leaked that there are three very strong frontrunners to play The Ancient One. (more…)
