Ant-Man

Ant Man’s paltry opening weekend box office numbers of $58M, which comes at the lower end of the scale we’ve come to expect from Marvel over the last few years ex. Thor($65.7M) and Captain America: The First Avenger ($65.1M), it still managed to leave fans abuzz in conversation due to the film’s post-credits scene. This along with some confirmation straight from Kevin Feige has us all piecing together what else we can expect from Marvel in Phase 3 of their cinematic adventures. (Spoilers Ahead)

Maybe you’ve seen Ant-Man by now and have lingering questions about exactly what goes down in the mid-credits and post-credits scenes.  Maybe you haven’t seen the film yet and would like some more knowledge to arm yourself with going in.  Maybe you’re like me and have seen the movie twice already and just think it’s really, really good (in my review of Ant-Man, I mentioned that these two scenes exist, but kept it spoiler-free).  Whatever the case, here’s some deeper info you might not know about the “secret” Ant-Man scenes – and it should go without saying here, but you’re entering MAJOR SPOILER TERRITORY, so consider yourself warned.

I know what you’re thinking – that’s a mighty bold statement you’re making there in the title, sailor.  Now hold up, Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers, I’mma let you finish… but Ant-Man just may truly be one of the greatest Marvel films of all time.  Of all time!

WARNING: Mild spoilers ahead – I did my best to keep quiet about the big stuff, but some parts of the film required a little explanation in the review.

There’s a scene in the latest Ant-Man trailer where Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) is giving Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) a pep talk to encourage him to suit up as the insectoid hero. Lang’s responses is that Pym’s dire straits seems more like a job for the Avengers than a new Ant-Man. Well, one out of six ain’t bad. It’s not exactly a state secret, and the appearance of the Avenger in question can be spoiled as easily as looking at Ant-Man’s IMDb page, but if you’d rather not know, then you’re advised to look away from this post, because the following Ant-Man TV spot pretty handily ruins what looks like a cool cameo in the upcoming Marvel Studios‘ film. The final International Trailer for Payton Reed‘s Ant-Man has hit the Internet and it delivers one of the movies best punch lines and direct reference to the much larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. The music is an interesting choice as well, perhaps James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy‘s musical influence is what we’ll see in all future Marvel films. Check it out after the jump. (more…)

Ant-Man hasn’t been released yet, but the sudden upswing in the tenor and quality of the hype surrounding it has got people thinking, what about Ant-Man 2? Of course, Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Studios‘ last surprising-but-not-surprising original hit, was approved for a sequel before it opened, and though Marvel may be locked in with release dates through to 2019, like Spider-Man proved, schedules can be changed if you give the studio a reason. Peyton Reed, director of Ant-Man, is hoping that he can make a case for another Marvel film, one that will deal exclusively with the background of one of Ant-Man’s main characters, who, in his comic book life, was one of the founding members of The Avengers, Hank Pym. Granted, there have been a lot of concerns about Ant-Man, from the sudden departure of Edgar Wright from the production mere weeks before it was supposed to begin, to the somewhat underwhelming response to the initial trailers. All signs pointed to Ant-Man fumbling Marvel Studios‘ string of recent successes, but there was hope and faith that Marvel could pull out a win, and the response so from those that have seen Ant-Man has been, for the most part, fairly positive. Amongst the fans of the new Marvel superhero is James Gunn, he who directed the studio’s last outside the box hit, Guardians of the Galaxy. So obviously he would know, right? More than that, Gunn was very enthusiastic about where Ant-Man will end up in the annals of Marvel movie lore. (more…)

As we get ready to see if Ant-Man ends up sinking or swimming at the box office, thus impeding (somewhat) or accelerating the gradual Marvel Studios takeover of Hollywood, we take some time to consider other questions. For instance, is there a real Mandarin? We all know that the door’s been left open, which is good because a lot of people are still sore about how the character was treated in Iron Man 3. In other important things to considerate, fans are still smarting over the seemingly one-sided relationship between Marvel’s movies and its TV series. It’s a shared universe, but only the TV side seems capable of sharing. What’s the deal? Fortunately, Marvel head Kevin Feige is available to explain it all, or at least offer insight. (more…)
