Apple

The rumour has been floating around in investment business circles for a while but so far that idea that technology giant Apple might buy Disney has been largely dismissed. If the two companies were to merge, the coalition would have a combined worth of $1 trillion. Between Disney’s wealth of content, particularly given its existing ownership of companies like Pixar, and Apple’s near monopoly on the gadgets market, the two companies would have an almost unrivalled scope in terms of reach. While many similar business mergers don’t have much of an impact on the world at large, Disney’s relatively recent acquisitions of both Marvel and Lucasfilm have proven that they make the absolute most of their deals. Game of Thrones Season 5 is almost upon us. To excite and tease eagerly awaiting fans, comes a new heart pounding trailer from Apple. This new look into the happenings of Westeros shows tons of new footage; including (but hardly limited to) the “breaking the wheel” monologue from Daenerys, in which she plots to end the cycle of family violence that has plagued her high born land, and more footage of Jonathan Pryce’s character the High Sparrow. This week in comic book censorship news, Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga is undergoing a bit of harassment from Apple.  Apparently, they’re refusing to distribute the latest issue, #12, via their apps due to some questionably sexy content.  A debate has arisen, however, of whether Apple is doing this because they don’t want to associate themselves with what they see as pornography, or whether it’s because the nature of the pornography in question is same-sex.

Apple has been on a rampage as of late, taking down more than 1500 other titles that it deemed inappropriate.  They’re not happy with anything dirty being sold through them, but they have run Saga freely up to the current issue and, if creator Vaughan can be trusted, there have been worse things in previous issues.

Vaughan’s press release states his own opinion on the matter:

Annoying press release thing: APPLE vs. SAGA #12

As has hopefully been clear from the first page of our first issue, SAGA is a series for the proverbial “mature reader.” Unfortunately, because of two postage stamp-sized images of gay sex, Apple is banning tomorrow’s SAGA #12 from being sold through any iOS apps. This is a drag, especially because our book has featured what I would consider much more graphic imagery in the past, but there you go. Fiona and I could always edit the images in question, but everything we put into the book is there to advance our story, not (just) to shock or titillate, so we’re not changing s**t.

Apologies to everyone who reads our series on iPads or iPhones, but here are your alternatives for Wednesday:

1) Head over to you friendly neighborhood comics shop and pick up a physical copy of our issue that you can have and hold forever.

2) While you’re at it, don’t forget to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which helps protect retailers who are brave enough to carry work that some in their communities might consider offensive. You can find signed copies of Saga at the CBLDF site right now.

3) Download the issue directly through sites like https://comics.imagecomics.com or on your non-Apple smartphone or tablet.

4) If all else fails, you might be able to find SAGA #12 in Apple’s iBookstore, which apparently sometimes allows more adult material to be sold than through its apps. Crazy, right?

Anyway, special thanks to Eric Stephenson and everyone at Image for supporting our decision, and for always being so supportive of creators. Sorry again to readers for the inconvenience, but I hope everyone will be able to find an issue that Fiona and I are particularly proud of. And after you do, please check out PanelSyndicate.com, the new digital comics site I own with artist Marcos Martin, which remains 100% uncensored by corporate overlords.

Your pal,

Brian

So the question of whether this is because of the nature of the sex is up for debate.  Legally, Apple is entitled to refuse to sell anything they don’t want to.  With the proliferation of other ways to get the comic, their opinion probably doesn’t mean very much in the short-run – just another group of people who don’t approve of this or that.  Luckily for us, we have the Internet, which no one entity rules (unless you count LOLcats).

Thanks to IGN for the heads-up.

Icrap – Ashton Kutcher To Play Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs was the creator, co-founder, chairman and face of one of the largest companies in the world. Sadly, Jobs died in Oct. of 2011. The world still mourns for him.

Hollywood, of course, will be honoring profiting from his life and death in a biopic indie simply called JobsJoshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) will direct from a script written by Matt Whiteley.

A film documenting one our generations foremost technology pioneers was certainly not unexpected. The man that has just been cast to play Jobs however, well that just threw me for a loop.

Variety says  Two and a Half Men and former That ’70s Show star Ashton Kutcher will portray the late Apple co-founder.

Despite my desire for this to be an April Fools joke, it is not. Ashton got the job (pun intended). The film will follow Jobs’ life from “wayward hippie to co-founder of Apple, where he became one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of our time.”

I’m not convinced Kutcher has the chops to pull it off. I will admit, however, they look very similar. That’s all, though.

Jobs shaped a lot of things within the tech, music, and film industries. You’d think Hollywood would honor his memory with a much more respectable actor. Oh well, that’s Hollywood for you.

ABOVE: What a kick ass Wasp cosplay! I’m a little sad we won’t see Wasp in The Avengers. Well, actually, Wasp can pretty annoying but when you’re looking for women on The Avengers you’re definitely limited. Which is probably why they went with Black Widow. And she’s just a party a minute! Ok. Not really. She’s hot but boring. What is with these lame Marvel chicks!? Still, excellent photography by jaytablante and excellent  cosplay from  Riki LeCotey. (Fashionably Geek)

Marvel really wants your dog to be a fan. Yesterday we shared their line of doggie apparel from new partner, Fetch. Today it’s dog toys! Admit it, you kind of want that Hulk fist just so you can get pictures of your dog being punch by Hulk then chewing his arm off. (Nerd Approved)

ABOVE: Arya Stark, all grown up. With tattoos! Knowing Arya I don’t think she’d really be seen in a dress if she could manage it, but a giant sword? Yeah, that sounds like her. Visit TDW: Geek for the whole beautiful photo shoot.

What. The. Fuck?! It’s a fake Apple store now complete with its own fake, dead Steve Jobs. Really, people!? (Reddit)

Of course by now you’re familiar with Apple’s new personal assistant, Siri. She says a lot of funny shit, particularly when you pose just the right question. And this, being the internet, is the entire point behind Shit That Siri Says. Soon, Siri could even have her own television sitcom.

Let’s be honest, being Batman is hard. While you’re out on the town investigating, looking for clues you can get jumped by gangs of roving thugs, or worse, be distracted by saving some chick the newest super villain’s tied up some 100 feet in the air. Then you have to try and solve the Riddler’s stupid riddles while your head is pounding from the fire extinguisher some douche threw at you. Sometimes it’s nice to have a little help. Thank you, Batman: Arkham City Official Map App.

Available on all iOS devices the $2.99 app can not only help you find your way around Arkham City, but also, “Find every Riddler Trophy for Batman & Catwoman,” “Solve every Riddle,” and “Track your progress as you bag more than 350 collectibles.” I mean, only if you’d like a little assistance. You are the world’s greatest detective and solving such things on your own is breeze.

The people have downloaded, and with just under a year to go until the official release of Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers fans will be downloading it’s trailer for a long time. The Marvel hero mash up will definitely get viewers upon it’s eventual May release, thanks in part to the 10 million people who downloaded the trailer in the first 24 hours alone. No Shit!

Since October 11th the trailer starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson has had consistent downloads from the Apple movie trailer page. If you haven’t seen it yet, and shame on you, click here for the trailer we posted earlier this week.

Here is the official press release:

Marvel Studios announced today that the trailer for next summer’s most highly anticipated movie, “Marvel’s The Avengers,” has been downloaded over 10 million times in its first 24 hours on iTunes Movie Trailers (http://www.apple.com/trailers), shattering the most-viewed trailer record in the site’s history.

The trailer, which debuted Tuesday, October 11, exclusively on iTunes Movie Trailers, gives fans a sneak peak at “Marvel’s The Avengers”—the Super Hero team up of a lifetime—based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since.

The film unites the world’s greatest Super Heroes when Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) join S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) to protect the world from the dangerously powerful villain, Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

An exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects,  “Marvel’s The Avengers” is from Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures, produced by Kevin Feige and directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon.

“Marvel’s The Avengers” will be released on May 4, 2012.

It may not be two minutes of Scarlett’s shiny behind, but it still carries more fist pumping action then your gonna need all year.
